when i pull away from a stop theres a clunk noise, almost like the rear brakes are hanging up, i ran the brakes out and it didnt stop, checked the drive shafts anthere isnt any play. my mechanic said it could be the rear leaf spings that are a bit worn flexing when stop and poping back when i pull off?? that sounded kinda nuts, i was thinking maybe the tourque converter? it does seem to go away for a bit after i drive it in 4wheel. any tips would be great, thanks.
I had that issue years ago... it was actually a lose wheel. So i would advice you check those first. (believe me, you don't want to be on 3 wheels when you're over 50 MPH)
My Ranger does the same thing, was told by mechanics at the ford dealer that it's the slip yoke in the drive shaft. There isn't zerk fitting on it, and over time the factory grease deteriates enough that a cluck is noticable when pulling away from a stop.
In addition to checking the lubrication on the slip joint, you might also lool at the condition of the transmission mount.
The rubber inside can and will seperate from the steel and it will permit the transfer case to move. This can cause many noises, and will bind the u-joints.
Simple to check.
I just replaced one a couple of days ago. It looked fine during a normal inspection. By placing a floor jack under the case, I could lift it until it hit the body. Nothing was holding it.
Interesting enough the small vibration that I lived with for so long went away too.
Go figure.
My spare tire under the bed lost air and became loose causing a clunk at take off. I aired it up and that fixed the problem....... I was looking for mechanical issues like you are......
hell yea..love the forum fix. 15 minutes and the grease gun and no more clunk...awsome. i thought for sure it was a much larger and pricey fix..thanks a ton guys.
Oops didn't realize it was a Bronco. LOL...... I had 2 of those too. Great 4x4's......... Sounds like they figured it out with a grease gun! Good info guys! Thanks
