Are there any good instructions out there on how to do it? I broke off one of the nuts to the solenoid. No I have to remove/replace the starter. Need some help.
It's pretty straight forward, just like Brandon said. Disconnect the batteries first (unless you REALLY like to get japped HARD) and loosen the nut for the power wire first. Then it's 3 bolts (I think they're 17mm but I do know they are all the same size) but BEFORE YOU FULLY LOWER IT, there is an 8mm nut holding on the signal wire to the solenoid. It's a bit of a pain to get to, but easy enough to remove. Pretty straight-forward wrenching overall.
I'd give it a 4 out of 10 difficult rating, so no worries.
My '01 has only 2 bolts as well. On mine there was enough slack in the wires to lower the starter and make access to the electrical connections easier.
just put a nippondenso high torque unit on my 2002. Only had two bolts. Top one was no picnic, but very dooable with a little patience. The newer starter is so big it barely fits against the frame, but man what a difference in turnover speed. Helped a lot in the cold start problems. Good luck!!!
I just did mine a little while ago. I have an 02 and had only two bolts in it. If you go to the parts store they may ask if you have a two hole or three. For the 02 it didn't matter. I pulled out a starter that was a "two hole" (the third was just filled in) and put in a three. Took maybe 45 min. Easy job, use extensions and a swivel.
I got one of the Denso 'super starters' after getting SICK of replacing POS rebuilt starters - even if they were 'free' replacement. This thing ZINGS the motor over!! Had to clearance the crossmember a little for it to fit. Looking for a deal on another one for the X - saw one on fleabay for $150, but missed it.
