Can't get my air to shift off of defroster so I unplugged the hubs in hope that would help. Basically I am coming straight out of the engine to the charcoal filter canister thing? to this thing i have pictured. I can put a vaccum on just after this thing and make my air shift and work correctly. So what is this thing?
Ok so I aparrently can't add a picture. So the best way to describe thing thing is that it's attached to the passenger side fender wall right behind the battery. One vaccuum line runs out to go inside the firewall and the other runs over to the charcoal filter type of thing. Any help to find a new one or to fix mine would be great.
Sounds as if you've got a leak in one of the lines going to your hubs. Pretty common occurrence. Find the bad hose(s) and replace. A vacuum leak will default your heater to defrost. Fix your vacuum leak and everything works again.
Sounds like you're describing the vacuum pump & canister near the passenger fender.
i thought that to. so i bypassed the hubs. took them out of teh equation completely. it goes engine -> canister -> plastic pump type thingy on fender wall -> through the firewall and into my selctor switches for the air direction. and if i hook the a hand vacuum pump right after the plastic pump thing. and create my own vaccuum the air system works normally. so what is this plastic type pump thing and how can i fix it or where can i get a new one? and if i get a new one what piece am i looking for put simply what is this thing called?
If you hook up your vacuum gauge (your hand vacuum pump) to the "thingy" and turn on the key, do you get any vacuum reading on the gauge? If not, the pump is not working. Check the fuse (#28 - 15 Amp under the dash, for a 2001 truck) and if it is good, your pump has probably died. It may have run all the time trying to keep up with the leak in your ESOF circuit.
I described a 7.3 diesel system. What engine do you have? If it is a gasser, then you may not have a vacuum pump.

Reason: Diesel system.
Furian - thanks for taking a picture but its not in there. the canister right behind the battery. it would be right on the passenger fender wall right next to the canister.
JockD - I will try that. I'll check that fuse and do the vaccuum check. Oh and it is a V10.
It has 3 wires hooked into so I am guessing it is some kind of pump, but my understanding of the vacuum system was that the vacuum was created from the intake manifold. Would this pump then jjust regulate it?
Let's try this. I put them on my facebook. If you have it I think you should be able to see it.
ok so i searched around these forums and found the vacuum solenoid part number and such and found out that guys pull all of that out cause they get rid of their ESOF hubs. but how do they get their ventilation air to blow right and not just always on defrost if they do that?
well i answered my own question and this whole problem was stupid easy to fix. talk to the dealership about the part and they wanted $ 94 so screw that. so since my whole front axle is jacked up anyways especially the esof system, and i will be getting rid of the auto hubs eventaully anyways (different post different day) I got rid of the solenoid and canister and plugged directly from the intake manifold hook up into my vacuum line for my ventialtion system. works like a charm and always has constant vacuum to shift the ventialtion now.
