I just bought this truck about a week ago. Now temps drop to below freezing last night and today she wont start. It has struggled in the cold the last week but has always started after cycling the gps. I think the o rings are bad and i already ordered the o ring kit. I think the gpr might be bad. How do you test that? Oh its a 95 powerstroke with 220,000 on it. If that helps.
if it started on the warmer days fine but it wont start in this cold weahter then its your glow plugs and they are bad. if you dont have the coin or time to replace them just plug the truck in untill you have them replaced.
actually, on a cold day and no block heater, go under the hood and hold the 2 prongs togetehr with a screwdriver and if it archss then you know that GP controller is good and your gps are bad.
Turn the key to the on position and listen for a "click". That would be your GPR turning on. Does not mean it's working be at least it is energizing. Also with the key on watch your volt meter. It should drop pretty low when the glow plugs are on and stay there, even with the engine running until the glow plugs turn off, up to 120 seconds.
If you have a volt meter it is easy to check. There are two large posts on the GPR. One is hot all the time and should measure battery voltage. When you turn the key to ON the other large post should now have battery voltage also, or close to it.
As a quick and dirty test take a screwdriver and short across those two large posts on the GPR for 30-45 seconds It will probably arc and get hot. Then jump in the truck and see if it will start. If it does then your GPR is probably bad.
X2 on the above 2...also does your WTS (Wait To Start) light come on? If it does not check fuses 22 and 9. If it does come on good, now ignore it. When the light goes off the relay is still on for up to two minutes. What state are you in anyway? Let us know what you find
Thanks guys, I checked the gpr with a test light and i think that the gpr is good and the plugs are bad. I got it to start and i'm just gonna plug it in until i can replace the glow plugs. I have to take off the valve covers to test them right? and i just check each one indivually with taking off the boot?
I think you can check them w/o taking off the covers. Someone else will explain how to w/multimeter. IF you take off the covers ya may as well replace them seeing how you will be there anyway.
Are your batteries good? Maybe get a load test on them. If one is bad it will drag the other one down, I think. Usually I change both at the same time. Also the starter could be getting weak. Changed mine at 240,000 for the first time. Starts good now. But at the same time I changed my leaky fuel pump and ran some good injector cleaner in the fuel bowl. never changed the glow plugs. Bought the truck new. I'm sure mine could use some though. If you have a multi meter there is a way to test them. Someone will on here will tell you how.
The batteries are good, i checked them. I took off the air filter and cleaned that out. I think the truck wasn't getting air because the filter was all dirty. So on top of it being cold, it wasn't getting much air. Thanks for all the help guys, I truly appreciate it. Merry Christmas to everyone.
You can test the GPs with the covers on. There are four UVCH connections (two on each cover gasket); each connection goes to two GPs and two injectors. At each UVCH connection there are five terminals. The "outer" two (#1 and #5) are for the corresponding GPs. Disconnect one connector and put an ohmmeter on the #1 terminal on the gasket (other probe to ground, such as battery negative). Resistance should be aprx. 1 ohm. Much higher or much lower means the GP is questionable. Infinite resistance ("open") means it's shot.

Thanks mad pogue, It,s what I've been waiting to hear. Going to go check mine. Just got a nice multi tester. Still remembering what's what on the thing. Try to give some points to ya.
