I just picked up a 78 f150 4x4 project for my son. There is no engine in it but I had a choice of 2 engines to take ( both need to be rebuilt) a 400 and a 351/400. Which would be the best one to take for Hp or does it really matter. Also I found a engine number which I think is otte-A28 or otte-a2B Does this sound right and what does it tell me about the engine? Thanks
The first 400 and the 400 in the 351/400 are the same. Ford only had the one 400 which shared the same block with the 351M which they began producing after they dropped the 351C in late 73 and could not keep up with the demand for 351 inch motors with the 351W.
Ford took the 400 and destroked it to make the 351M. Hence the name Modified (M)...they took a 400 and "modified" it. Some feel the M stands for Midland or Michigan but all of the Ford literature back into the day that I have plus some Hot Rod articles and my memory all point to the Modified.
Anyway, I would go with the 400 (if milage is not more important than power) since there is no substitute for larger displacement when making power.
Look real close at the two engines, they should look just alike. The fuel pump bolts should be verticle (one over the pump and one below) and not horizontal. The heads should be rather large and you should not be able to see a true timing cover but a plate behind the water pump that attaches to the block casting that is aroung the timing chain and gears. If they do not share these characteristics I would question what the odd ball is.
