The question I have is about the spring inside the lower radiator hose. When I replaced it I was able to salvage most of the spring, however this next time I'm fairly certain I will not be so lucky. The auto parts stores can sell the hoses, however you cannot buy them with the support spring in them. Where do you guys get yours? Thanks.
I've never come across that issue, every lower radiator hose i ever bought has the spring inside to prevent collapsing, is this a molded hose or a flex hose?
Its the pre-bent rubber hose. You must have much better luck than me, I have never found a hose with the spring in it! Where do you typically buy your hoses at?
Napa didn't have a lower hose with a spring in it for my application. Neither did anyone else. I had the Napa guy look around in back and find a similar hose that did have a spring. I bought both and took the spring out of the one and put it in the one I needed, which is for my 302. It was kind of a wrestling match getting it in there.
They say that the new hoses are built strong enough so they don't collapse. I can sure squeeze them shut easy enough without a spring in there.

I ran into that this past summer at Napa, they told me the same. However, I took the spring out of the old hose which was in decent shape, and put it in the new hose.
Then when I was cleaning out behind the seat I found a new hose which the PO bought back in the 80's and never used, which still had the spring in it.
Hmmm, well, I usually remove the springs......they have usually rusted and broken up, and I don't want that crap in my radiator, water pump or engine!! I have never had an issue, as long as all the components are up to scratch, then it shouldn't be an issue.
Just my experiences, others may have had issues though, not claiming anyone is wrong here.

That spring has to be in there. Your a very lucky guy to have not flatened it out..............yet.
DUE TO THE REMOTE TOWN THAT I LIVE IN AND TRAVEL AROUND I REPLACED MY UPPERS/LOWERS WITH A FLEXABLE/BENDABLE STAINLESS STEEL KIT LOOKS GOOD,AND WILL LAST FOREVER NO PROBLEMS SO FAR WORTH THE MONEY FOR PEACE OF MIND IT HAS THE SS HOSE AND RUBBER END HOSES AND COVERS

Now here is a guy that does not abuse his rig. They will run forever without sucking flat at low rpm's but wind it up and she will suck flat and you can watch your guage rise.
That's interesting, 79Indy why some hoses come with the spring in them and others don't. Maybe different hose designs / shapes are more prone to collapsing than others?
Starmilt, what do you mean by "wind it up and it will suck flat" - what kind of RPM's are you talking about?
When I put the lower hose on my '79 F250 Crew, 400, I'd like to know what I should also do about the spring issue.
yes i would like to know also what sucking it flat means? before i replaced the rubber hose with ss and even now my 501 stroker will run 6250 rpm all day long with no problems and thats with a ho aluminum water pump with a pully for extra cooling
