Mine are 10 years old and working like new. I set inside and turn the switch when I get in a jam and not having to get out and and lock it in is nice to me. Just do the maintenance on them as needed and it seems to be possible. I have done the maintenance that Guzzle suggest and it works so far

Thank you, maevans!

This brings up a new question:
I looked up the definition of "Shift-On-the-Fly" and got this: "The ability of a four-wheel-drive vehicle to be shifted between two- and four-wheel drive while the vehicle is in motion." Ok, that makes sense.

I have a 2001 F350 PSD 4X4 (automatic trans) with the switch on the dash for 4x4 hi and 4x4 low. The only other vehicles I've driven off-road are a '64 CJ3b and a '67 Bronco, both of which have manual transmissions with the second shifter for 4wd and the front hubs had to be locked in manually. So, basically, the switch on the dash of the 350 is like the second shifter in the 3b and the bronco, correct?

Yes, a transfer case lever and hub engager, too.
