EGR, removed???
Just bought a 1995 F250 rust free with a 7.5l Bigblock 460 with an auto trans...
Truck runs great, but was beat up... 600.00 so I can't complain.
Exghaust has a hole in muffle, leaking under cab... Check engine light comes on once and awhile, and noticed someone cut the EGR Wire...
Here are my questions???
1). What does a EGR do? And Why do I need it?
2). Do I need a Cat??? What about a straight exghaust with a muffler???
3). Is this going to effect any computers???
Let me know, and no I will not need it inspected... Live in NH, going to put Agi Plates on it.
Thanks,
A CAT is a federally mandated piece of emissions equipment. Is it necessary, no. Do you need it? By law, yes. I dont know about your truck but mine (being an 88) the O2 sensor comes before the CATs so it would not effect anything but tailpipe emissions. A lot of guys on here straight pipe their trucks. (and yes, you can put headers on)
And answer about computer is above.
I can remove the cat and muffler, and send a straight pipe out...
The EGR doesn't effect the motor, so leave it disconnected???
Is there a Down side to the wire EGR being cut???
Let me know if I understand this correctly...
But, removing the egr will increase your emissions -- but nothing like what happens if you pull the CAT. Both are illegal, although there may be some exemption for your ag deal. However, it's not a great thing to do.
EGR does affect performance because it changes the mixture. Putting exhaust gas back in the cylinder cools the charge and also (IIRC) leans the mixture. This is because there's some unmetered exhaust gas going into the cylinder. The PCM is set up for this, so if you remove it, the performance is probably slightly affected. Probably not much in a pre obdii truck.
Ford uses several variations on egr, but from reading these forums there seems to be one or two parts that cause most of the trouble -- you can probably see that if you do a search on egr.
EGR also has problems because the exhaust can clog up the little passageways that it runs through.
If I do remove the CAT, will that increase power or decrease???
I know the Flow restriction will be gone, but the back preasure to???
Its a 460, any suggestions... Reminder don't care about streetlegal...This is more for fun than anything.
The wires only report back the PCM, they tell it if the valve is doing what the PCM asked of it to do.
The vacuum line (hose) on top of the EGR valve is what makes it work.
Note one of the wires is the 5 Volt Ref from the computer and if this wire shorts to ground you will have a big problem.
