I installed the pertronix thing about 2 weeks ago and also went to the large cap and rotor swap. Im running 8.8 Accel wires, split fire plugs and an Accel coil. It idles fine until after I run the engine for like more than 10-15 minutes and then it starts idling irratic. My tach starts jumping around and the rpm slows down about 100-200 rpms. What could cause this?????
this happened on my truck also, shortly after installing an accel coil. It was caused by loose primary wiring, I also expected the problem might be with the crimp-on eyelets that I used to connect the wires to the coil. so, I soldered all connections and tied all the wires down with zippy ties and have had no problems since.
What carb do you have? Is it in good shapen as in are the Idle jets clean? If it is after it warms up you may have a vacuum leak to me ...
Also what is the Initial timing set at? 8-10 deg.
Did you remember to leave the grounging wire connected from the Points Mounting plate to the frame of the distributor when you removed the old points set up?
but why does it only do it after the truck warms up. When i first crank it it is at like 800 rpm in park and drops to 600 in gear. But after like 15 minutes it drops to like 650 in park and 450 in gear. Also i just installed a 268H comp cam and edelbrock intake. Do i just need to idle it up when the tach starts jumping around? In other words is this just what a cam does or would it not only do it when the engine warms up? I hooked a voltmeter to the possitive side of coil and it shows 10 volts even when the tach starts jumping and the voltmeter is showing steady. Any suggestions??? Thanks in advance for any help.
Not sure you have seen my first post....

As the engine warms up things change... First of all it becomes more effechient... iam using a Pertronix Module in my 390. If it is installed correctialy it should be fine. Iam just guessing that it if Fuel Mixture Related... Try to Even Out the Idle mixture screws and see if it CHANGES ANYTHING!
Thanks for the replies. Ill look into the vacuum leak and idle mixture tommorow and post back what i find. I cant wait to figure it out so i can see how the intake and cam did. I havent even really took it out for a good test drive yet. Also Ill check the wiring at the coil. Thanks again and ill repost what i find out so please stay tuned. Thanks again
I guess that i just had a vacuum leak cause i went back over everything with the wrench and it seems ok so far. But now im having trouble with my tranny not wanting to go in gear and when it does it doesnt downshift. Sometimes it does ok and sometimes it doesnt. Everytime i think its right then it just starts acting up again. Sometimes it just starts in 2nd gear even if i manually put it in 1st. It doesnt want to go into reverse unless i rev the engine up a couple of times. Thanks for the help on the irratic idle. Any suggestions on my new problem????

I assume you have a C-6?
Ok, First check the vacuum tubing going to the vacuum modulator. Replace the rubber tubing on both ends. Now, I would replace the vacuum Modulator there now expensive!! there is an adjusting screw in the tube port that is used to adjust he shift point. turning the screw IN `Raises` the shift point...
Give it a look see
I redid my timing and that kinda fixed the tranny problem. I heard that the irratic idle was what it would be like with a cam.(that its supposed to do that) Guess i gotta lot of learning and tuning to do. Thanks for all the help. Do you think a 600 cfm carb is big enough(or too big) for my motor? 390 bored 60,headman headers, pertronix, accel 8.8 wires and coil, Comp Cams 268H cam, edelbrock performer intake and 600 cfm carb,373 gears,C6 tranny. Something just isnt right with my combo, only running 10s in the 8th mile. Anyway thanks again.
