Hey, so i bought a truck this summer, 2000 250, and the previous owner replaced the turbo and intercooler. My question is how the hell do i figure out what model turbo he put in? It says turbonetics on it, but i am having a really hard time figureing out what exact model it is. Also how do i tell if he replaced the boots on the injector tubes...I can try and post pictures in a little bit to see if it helps. The reason I want to know is its christmas time and i'm thinking about getting myself/truck a nice christmas present after christmas is over. Id like to know exactly what I am working with before I go shopping so i can get the most bang for my buck.
picture of the turbo would help...if the boots for the intercooler tubes look clean and doesnt look weather cracked or feel flimsy..you should be good to go..
These pics are of a Turbonetis Part #11117-BB. Turbonetics no longer makes them.
They had quality control problems. So far so good with mine but my fingers are crossed.
I believe this may have been the only turbo they made for the 7.3.
Edit : Joe, While I was looking for the pics you beat me to the exlanation. Oh well, I'm just gettin' slower every day.
that last pic is definitely what I have. Pics of my stuff will be up in a second. What do I need to be watching out for with that turbo? Also will the bellowed up-pipes work with it? and will the 6637 intake help over the AFE stage 3 I have right now? It seems to build decent boost but when I really get on it, i get about 5lbs then it holds at that for a little bit then shoots up to 20lbs. I also have a DP-tuner, but no idea if they are custom tunes with that turbo in or not...Also how do I know if he changed the intercooler...he said he did but i'm not too sure.
Also, what kind of mods can I do to this turbo safely? Can I put a wicked wheel in it? would that make a difference in power? what about an ATS intake part? Just trying to figure out what my next mods should be...i have roughly $800 to spend, would prefer to spend less of it, but I want to make some kind of upgrade to my truck....just the modding bug I guess.
You're only getting 20psi?? That thing should easily do 30. Yes, bellowed up-pipes will work. I don't think Jody does any special tuning for just the turbo. Maybe some slight tweaks during live tuning... I doubt the 6637 would be much better, since you already have the AFE, might as well roll with it. Unless you get tired of cleaning it (it is a cleanable element, right?).
What kind of IC did he say he put in? I have a 6.0L IC in mine -- it's easy to tell since it's about 10" taller.
Can I put a wicked wheel in it? what about an ATS intake part?
No whicked wheel or ATS intake housing needed. If you look at the pic of intake side you will see it already has a similar compressor wheel as a WW and a ported intake, both to reduce or eliminate surging.
I get 26 PSI boost at 5,000 ft with small stock E99 AB code injectors.
Just periodically check the compressor wheel for play. These turbos are only half ball bearing. The compressor (intake) side of the center shaft is ball bearing but the turbine (exhaust) side is a journal bearing.
the best i've gotten was 22lbs at WOT. It will give me 5-8 lbs easy, but when I open it up it will go to around 8 lbs then pause until i hit about 2500 rpm then it boosts all the way up.
here are the pics... just took them
anyways, let me know what the problems that i need to watch out for, and what decent upgrades i can make to either the turbo or the surrounding parts..
Thanks guys...and I will check on the intercooler tomorrow, any chance someone can get me measurements on the 6.0 intercooler and the stock intercooler?
the issue i'm dealing with mainly is the guy didnt really say what kind he did. He did the work over 6 years and only used the truck for long hauls. So now i'm trying to figure out what exactly he did to it so I dont end up buying things he already did. That and I have no idea whether when he got the tunes from jody if he got them for the stock truck or for a truck with intake exhaust etc. When i step on it with the 80econ i get plenty of smoke..almost feels like not enough air.
You should get some smoke until the turbo lights. The boot in that last pic doesn't look stock, so at least that one is new. Here's what the stock (small) and 6.0L (larger) IC look like:
no visible soot in behind the engine from up-pipes. I think the intercooler is the stock one...it looks the same..i'll have to pull the grill to know for sure..unless there is an easier check.
check the sides of the i/c from under the hood if they are cast metal its probably the 7.3, sheet metal its aftermarket such as banks or spearco and if its plastic its ford 6.0
So what mods should i do...I have the turbo, 6.0 IC AFE intake, and 4" exhaust....not sure if i have a 4" DP or not...if i dont maybe get a 4" DP and the bellowed up-pipes since ill have everything torn down anyways? also what is the point of eliminating the EBV? As i understand it this is just a matter of gutting the pedestal....Lets hear some suggestions!
