I'm planning on rotating the tires on my newly acquired F250. The rear tires have roughly 40% tread remaining, evenly worn. The front tires have about 80% remaining and are evenly worn.
I'd like to get those rear tires up in the front quickly so that I can spread out the wear.
Any reason I would not want to do this ASAP? Is there a magic point at which you don't want worn tires up front?
I don't think 40% is a problem up front. Problem is, as I'm sure you know, you've got so much difference between front and rear wear that you won't be able to catch up and even out. So you'll be replacing prematurely. If you're going to rotate, best do it ASAP as you are planning.
Alternatively, you could leave them where they are until the rears wear down a bit more, and then just buy two tires. Then adjust your rotation schedule to try to even them out before time to buy again. This is what I am doing because a previous owner let them get way out of sync.
