Computer question

I remember reading somewhere here that some computers only send information to the tranny while others receive info from the tranny as well. I can not find the thread so I am posting here.

My question is in regard to the OBD2 computer in the '96 mustang GT. Does this computer require signal from the tranny to operate?

I found a '96 Mustang GT in the local yard and grabbed the computer while I had the chance. The problem is that the GT had an automatic tranny. My project currently has an E40D auto tranny but will eventually have the ZF5 put behind the 460. If the computer does require signal from the tranny, Is there a way to fool it into thinking the Tranny is there. I will eventually get the proper computer but for now I want to get the ball rolling.

I know that it is crazy going with this computer for my MAF conversion. But that's me.

The Mustang would have had a 4R70W transmission in it and the computer gets information from the range sensor, output shaft speed sensor and the temp sensor in the transmission.

It would not work with the E4OD transmission and would set codes with E4OD or the ZF5 Transmission.

The Mustang engine would have been a 3.8L or a 4.6L so no the Computer would not work with your 460.

For the Mustang engine, it was a 4.6. A bit of programing and it will work with the 460. I am addressing the sensor issue already.

I know that I can not plug it into the E40D. I already have a solution to keep the transmission running properly without plugging it into the Mustang tranny.

With my current computer I can unplug the tranny from the computer and still have the engine run properly. Will the Mustang computer run properly without the tranny plugged into the computer as well?

Do you realize that OBD-2 computer won't even plug into the wiring harness on your truck?

Already have "new" harness on the way. Was going to make my own but found one on eBay for $40 shipped. So I went that route.

I'm not sure what thread gave you the information that the computer requires input from the tranny to run correctly, but that's wrong. If you have a computer-controlled transmission, then you need the correct computer to run it. If you have a non-computer-controlled transmission then it doesn't matter what computer, if any, you use.

So lemme get this straight - you have a 96 F-250, with an OBD-I, speed density 460, and you bought a computer that is designed for an OBD-II, mass air, Mustang 4.6L? I can't WAIT to see how you're going to get this to work.

Wow.. you're taking the uphill route aren't you. Yes the mustang computer will run without a tranny attached just like the truck computer, just need to do a MPLS type trick to make it think it's in drive or neutral and make sure it gets the VSS input.

I bet that instead of driving to work everyday, he crawls there on his hands and knees.

Pretty much, yes. Rather than use the popular method of using an A9L computer for a MAF conversion I am going the OBDII route. I want more programing options. Plus I like a challenge. And no I do not crawl to work.

Thank you Conanski, for your input.
