Help/Advice on Cat Convert Replacement

Your 2 cents are appreciated.

My ex-wife just got her 2000 Expedition XLT 4.6 back from the local independant shop with a quote of $1100 to replace just the front right Cat. Check engine light is one and thats what was diagonsed.

My understanding is that the truck has 4 cats. 2 front and 2 rear on each side.

My dilema is that she told them she was on a budget....truck has 130k on the clock and they still quoted her that price.

I looked up the local muffler shop here in Franklin TN that has high reviews on line from its customers and they quoted me $569 to do both the front and rear on the right side. I'm assuming with aftermarket parts.

What are your thoughts on this? I feel like$1100 for just the right front does not seem cost effective....I'm surpized they didn't offer an alternative.

Does anyone have any experince with aftermartet cats?

Thanks

John Richards

Jegs, Summit and others offer high flow cats at very reasonable prices, I would look there. years ago we used to run the car down to almost 1/4 tank and add a gallon of methanol to make a car pass emissions check in Fla. I don't know if that would help or harm the cats. There used to be some info about cleaning the cats that required removal and flushing with a solution of Muriatic acid and water. I've never tried it so I don't know if it would be a good idea. I did consider it though when I was quoted about $1850 for the lt. side cat and manifold for my Mark VIII. I welded the manifold and saved some money.

I would say, at $1100 they're going to the dealer and buying an OEM part to install. I don't know how else they could get the price up that high. Maybe they intend on replacing an O2 sensor also? But still shouldn't be that much. I don't have any experience with aftermarket cats, but wouldn't have any problem using one. Maybe you could, or she could, buy the parts and go to a shop so it's only a labor charge.

Not to get off subject, but what did you have to pass emissions in FL for? I've lived here for 25 years and haven't had to, or heard of anyone having to, go through any emissions inspections.

The state of Florida required emissions testing for a number of years, in the 80s and early 90s that I know of. They not only checked the emissions but rolled a mirror under the car to be certain the cats were in place. I believe the testing was only done in Dade, Broward, Pinellas/Tampa-St Pete and Jax. I don't know if they ever stopped checking in those areas but I remember the populations of all those areas protested because they felt it was unfair.

Wow. Never heard of it, but then again, I've only lived in Volusia, St. Johns and Brevard counties. Thanks for the info.

get direct-fit...just unbolt and bolt back up with new gaskets...simple enough so long as you can get the old bolts out

Check the Summit and Jegs websites, I think the low cost, high flow cats will have to be welded. You can weld direct to your existing pipes or have flanges welded onto the pipes and cats to be able to unbolt them. The savings either way should be substantial.

if going universal, you should be able to pick one up for about $100 to $150 at any parts store, then just cut and weld
