Sometimes the ads are based by browsing history, but more often then not, they are based on keywords on the page the ads are located. So if someone was talking about Toyota a lot in a thread, you may get a lot of Toyota ads.
Same thing on one of the Mustang sites I visit, GM ads running rampant. I also have NEVER visted GM sites, so they aren't showing up that way. I think it's more a case of GM doing whatever it takes to sell cars to the people that kept Ford from taking tax dollars, you and me...
