Hello everyone! I bought a c series dumper today. This all started because I need a way to haul my rock crawler suzuki samurai so I started looking for a flatbed trailer on craigslist and I stumbled onto this truck for a grand. The way my logic went it makes WAY more sense to spend a thousand on a dump truck, then spend another 5-6 hundred fabbing a flatbed for it, then spending an unknown amount for reg/insurance, then spend twice as much gas money to haul my samurai on a truck that's absurdly overrated for this job rather than just buy a trailer I can pull behind the camper special I already have. What can I say, I have always wanted a big truck and this was just the excuse I needed. Now if I can just find an excuse for the landlord!
I've been looking all over and I can't seem to find a vin decoder for these trucks (not really surprising) so I was hoping someone here could help me as I don't know much about the big trucks yet. It's completion date is in '79, although the dump body maker's tag says "date inc. veh. manufacture '76" and the fuel tank has a '76 date on it. vin# c75ev08972 and it has power steering, air brakes, a ft fe of some kind and a five speed with 2spd rear. The badge on the door says c7000. Any help would be appriciated, I know the little trucks from 61-79 fairly well but this is a whole new world. Sorry about the long post but I'm kinda excited, I get to DRIVE this Tonka!
First off Jason - Welcome to FTE!
You'll find a great bunch of people reside here and if they don't have the info at their finger tips, will usually come up with it in short order. Now as to your new truck: C75 - C750 gas (although my book shows this code use only going thru '78?) E - Engine Code up thru '78 it would be a 361 (FT) FT engines were out of production for 79
(if it is a 361 of 78 vintage, should be a 4bbl carb in 79 FT's were replaced with 370's or 429's) V - Assembly Plant - Kentucky Truck Plant 08972 - Serial number - there should be 6 figures here to help id year it was made, and the first is typically a letter
Are there any additional tags on the truck you could provide info / codes from? e.g. left cab pillar by door latch, glove box door?
Thank you for the info! The guy I'm getting the truck from doesn't know anything about it, he said it had a 4 something, but I never heard of an ft that big so I figured 391. there are holes on the drivers side door where there might have been a tag as some point but if so it's not there now. All I've seen is the tag that the dump body maker put on it when they got the chassis/cab and it seems to indicate that the truck is a '76 and although the vin# on that tag and the title match the title says '79. I can't imagine it taking over 2 yrs to put a dump bed on it!. I haven't had a chance to really go over the truck yet as I havn't picked it up. It's been sitting for about 5 yrs and when I primed the carb and fired it up all the fuel bowl gaskets and the transfer tube o-rings started spewing gas like holleys will when they sit. When I get it home I'll post pics of what I find for y'all to look at.
P.S. I need a drivers door window, do these share windows with any of the small trucks? Thanks Again!!
Once you get it home and have a chance to go over it you might be able to find / provide more code info eg; Engine Emission Decal info etc. In that light I'm attaching a link to another thread on this site. I don't know your background or experience so, for the sake of safety, I may be stating the obvious to you and mean no offense. What ever you do, do not get you or any part of you between the bed and chassis with the bed lifted without proper blocking / support. Same goes with your cab whiile poking around the engine etc.
You may also want to pick up a Ford Chassis Parts catalog or CD. They'll provide you with directional part numbers and exploded view drawings. It's where I got some of your VIN info from. You can find them on EBay, just do a search for 1973-79 Ford HD F600/900 Truck Master Parts Catalog CD.
Your 100% right, NEVER get any part of you under anything held up with hydraulics it's just not worth it. No matter how fast you are, you will get swatted and if your lucky you'll only lose an arm.
Yeah, I plan on getting some shop manuals asap. Grandpa worked at the Ford Mohave proving grounds from the late 50's till the mid 80's and if grandma hasn't tossed 'em he had crates of shop manuals and testing info for tons of ford vehicles that came thru over the decades. Hopefully he's got some, if not then ebay will be my no.2.
