the po put a ovee drive system in my 84 i was driving and tge thing locked in low i didnt even care becuz i was just dropping my friends off later i look down and its back in high when i parked my truck i heard this like loud fan noise coming from the bottom of my truck i got under my truck and it sounds like its from tge tranny but i was like how could it be the tranny if the engine is on unhooked the batteries and it shuts off so i know its electrical and almost knows it that over drive system but wut would be spinning i know nothing about this electrical over drive system
Not exactly how they work but they have an electric and I assume a screw gear or something of that nature to shift them. I do know they will shift back and forth and act goofy when low on fluid. More than likely the best thing to do is take it off and send it to me. lol.
well i was thinking about taking it off i really have zero use for it, considering i never tow anything besides a car or maybe another truck, and if i do ever have to tow i have a turbo so i dont really think i need that extra gear. but i love it to lauch off lights against my friends with there dang chevy ls 1500's and junky s10/ranger ot even my friends mercedes(toyota supra engine) lol.... but i dont know how this system is hooked up and hard to find wires to follow in my truck becuz the PO put so many new wires in for lights. camping gear, every trailer hitch hook up, extra gagues, ect... so tomorrow i will have a better look, maybe find out how this thing works... i will get pics so u guys can see this overdrive thing cuz form all the post i recive, i can tell no one has this set up on an older truck and i dont really know wut im doign with electrical or trannies... there my downfall
It would help if we knew which overdrive was installed and about what year is was put in. US Gear changed quite a bit from the early 80's, Gear Vendor not so much but did have upgrades. Mitchell didn't change much but they are no longer built.
I don't now of any other aftermarket OD's except adding a brownie.
On the right side (passenger side) of the unit look for a metal tag that will say "P TYPE" and/or Laycock, Gear Vendor along with a serial #. If you have one of these units I can tell you just about anything to diagnose and repair. Let us know what you got. If you can't figure it out post a pic.
i got the overdrive system and just unplugged it from the back of the tranny... there was 3 plug in and 1 ground, i taped up the ground and then tapped a plastic bad to all 4 units and zip tied it to the fram so i can be fixed or replaced with something better if or when i need it again...
it is a us gear dual rang (high low) i will take some pics of the lil switch that is mounted to my colum shifter and were i unplugged the lil electrical unit deal thingys lol... i just need to grab my bros phone and take the pics and upload em here

when i take the pics ill get the # and stuff off that unit so yall can help me with that, maybe its an easy fix, maybe not
I don't know anything about the us gear, but if you can repair it I would I have the GV in one of mine and will someday get one for the other one or at least change to a ZF5.
I understand the us gear for the 4x4 goes between the tranny and transfer case which would be desirable. I am pretty picky about who drives mine in the winter because of the GV.
