E40D TRANSMISSION TROUBLE!!!

I have a 1996 F-150, it will shift very harh and my overdrive light starts flashing once it slams into gear. at times i can be driving down the road and my rpms reach 5000 before shifting into second, i also can have my foot on the gas pedal steady and it will all of a sudden act like its in neutral and then it slams into second. my overdrive light starts flashing and engine light came on. i have taken it in for the check engine light and it was a speed sensor i replaced that and the fluid and the problem is still their. I am in school for Automotve but just havent taken the automatics class yet. Someone help!!!

MLPS - Manual Lever Position Sensor, side of trans or
PSOM - Programmable Speedometer/Odometer Module, behind speedo.

Best guess based on symptoms? the latter of the two, however the MLPS does give very similar symptoms.

My bet is on the MLPS as indicated earlier. Pull the stored codes to help guide you to what the PCM thinks is going wrong before spending money

if it's like mine the PSOM should show a VSS code
would do great when cold as soon as it got warmed up -as in after about 30 minutes blam erratic shifts slam into gears e.t.c
I just checked everything else and swapped out the cluster
been through 2 so far-last one has been good for about 3 years

Does anyone's Speedometer act up when this is happening? I have had a intermittant shifting problem with my truck, but the speedometer would also act up with it, or sometimes by itself. What would happen is the odometer would cut out and the speedometer would freeze at the last recorded speed.

Almost by accident, ( or a fit of rage) I discovered that that a very persuassive fist pounding to the dashboard would make the speedo and odo pop back on. HMM...

I haven't had an issue since last summer, after a TPS was replaced, but I doubt it was the "fix" also seeing as how my speedo went out yesterday, but My swift fist persuaded it to reconsider itself

Let me know what Ya think, and if it helps someone else or they can help me, thanks

There is a post somewhere about this. As it turns out there is a bad solder joint on the PSOM board. When he re-soldered it every thing was fine.

Oh really? hmm... I've never been behind the cluster on this, I don't know what it would look like for starters. The speedo has bulbs burnt out anyway already, from 30mph to 65mph, ya kinda have to guess at night, lol.

whats one of those psom's cost if needed? are they junk yard only or can they still be bought new? I've seen a lot of talk about 'em but no talk of cost.

My truck's really weird, seems like only acts up around winters.

definitely a junk yard part - when Ford was selling them they were $450 to $600 some for the parts and some for the lab that set the odo on the replacement to be what they thought it should be

If you can get one from a 1995-96 it is best as they had an improvement in them around 1994 but they will work from 1992-1996+ from a Bronco, E-series, F-series and maybe others.
Note that you will get the odometer reading to start with that the truck had you got it out of.

The PSOM:

Ha, we diagnosed it at school and we have clutch pack slippage 1 and 2 torque converter malfunction and low pressure. the transmission finally went south on me 2 weeks ago,on freeway headed to my parents house and it started slipping did that about 5 times and finally came too a stop no forward gears and no reverse. got it home tore trans out and tore into it and about half of my friction discks were fried. and burn marks all over my steel discks. got pics if you wanna see them!! iam gonna rebuild my transmission in school, so its all good in the mean time i am gonna get a used oneat a junkyard. should be back on the road next weekend.
