i found that i can buy a rebuilt c6 from track auto parts for around $400.oo w/exchange.
that sounds like a good deal to me.
i want to put in a shift kit, maybe a tow and go.
does it make sense to put one into a new rebuilt tranny?
is this somethink i can do without screwing up the tranny?
From what I have been told of automatic transmissions (tranny shop I bought my C-4 at)a street shift kit will actually improve the life of the tranny. Stock trannys are set up for soft shifts since the manufacturer wants to appeal to the majority. Softer shifts allow more slippage between gears and thus, more wear on bands and such. Now, I believe there is a limit as the constant hard shifts at full throttle of a race style shift kit have to be pretty hard on internals.
Is all this true.....I don't know but it seems to make sense. My C-4 seems to be holding up great and the firmer shifts feel much better.
I put a shift kit in the C6 behind my 390 in my 73 F100. Not to bad to do. Drop the pan and valve body, change a couple of check ***** and drill a hole and reassemble. I smelled like tranny fluid for awile though. Kinda hard to not get it all over yourself. I probaly spent 3 hours on mine but thats draining the fluid and cleaning everything real good.
