Well, I got the alternator changed and now my ABS light is on. Last week the alternator died and then so did the truck, dash lights went crazy right before the truck died. Now with new alternator installed, the ABS light goes out right after starting the truck and then comes right back on. The airbag light also seems to stay on longer than it used to, but it finally goes out and stays out. Could the alternator going out have cooked the ABS system? Is this something that maybe just needs to be reset at the dealer? I checked the ABS fuse and it is still good. The truck is a 2003 F-250 Lariat FX4, 6.0PSD.
Try disconnecting the battery cables with the headlight switch on for 20 minutes or so to clear the Keep Alive Memory. You'll lose your radio station presets, but it's worth a shot.
Also, if you have done a lift or level kit.
I had one of the ABS sensor wires rub on my front left tire causing the ABS light to come on/off as the tire rubbed off the insulation on the wire.
In case your ABS light comes back on again...
One last question... Is it just my imagination, or can replacing an alternator actually make my truck run better over-all? It seems to be shifting better and running better in general. Wierd...
Voltage (if that was a problem) is now back to normal.
FICM and other electronics start to peter out and act odd with low voltages.
Ditto problem for bad batteries.
Electronics run everything in the car, including the engine, tranny computer.
Bad power quality is the enemy of electronics.
Take my word for it --- I worked electronics for a long time.. from the first transistorized ignition systems (that failed miserably) to the current generation.
A lot of work goes into getting them to work in the extreme conditions of heat, cold, etc.
Even then, gremlins happen all the time.
That is why I almost never trust a computer coughing up a code.
Reset the thing, see if it is just a gremlin... then... start with bad connections.. and move up the problem guesses from there.
well ya know......everytime i disconnect my batteries for any reason my tranny seems to shift better. i thought it was just me, but now it's you to. i don't feel so weird about it now.
That makes good sense gearloose1. In your last post are you suggesting that a "problem" might have disappeared with clearfing the memory or are you suggesting that now I may have a more serious condition?
When going for long drives the little wrench light comes on. Truck still runs and drives fine. I can pull over shut the truck down for a few and it seems to go away then about fifty mile it comes back on... What could cause that?? And this trip the ABS light came on. I disconnected the battery for about 45 mins with the lights on and it is still on. Any ideas out their???
