I recently bought a 78 xlt bronco, with a 351m or 400 in it, 4 speed transmission. Has a blown rear end, and is pretty rusty (werent most of them?!)
I bought it from a relative for dirt dirt cheap, with the intention to slap a diff in the rear end and bomb around with it on the farm. Then I thought about fixing it up a little to make it "nice" and I also have had some interest in it when I talked about selling it.
Real question is, is it really worth keeping or not? I like fords of all years, but I dont have my heart set on a bronco in particular.
How far is too far gone for some of you guys?
I know in the end it comes down to me, and what I want and blah blah blah, but im curious to think what others have to say!
If the frame is solid, I'd fix it up on the cheap and keep it. If you're just going to use it for playing around, then it doesn't have to be pretty. Besides, you might turn into a Bronco lover.
If you have to ask it's not the truck for you. My '84 F-150 is probably nothing more than a POS truck to most people. I however love it. I bought a rust free running and driving '81 F-150 from New Mexico to fix my truck up. Some would say I'm nuts, but I got history with the old gal and that's all that matters to me. Either you love them or you don't. You'll have more money in it, in the end, then what you'll get out of it in return. Do it because you have a passion for it... otherwise let it go.
Here here. These beasts are a love of thier own for those of use who own and drive them. Mine is rusty (for now) and a work in process. I have been told that I should buy something newer and for what I now have in it (about $15000) I could have but it is now unique and she is a part of me. I will drive this beast till they make me park her or croak!
You are asking members in a forum that LOVE our Broncos and you got logical answers. Why would anyone love something that weighs 5500 pounds has the aerodynamics of a cinder block and gets 16 mpg at the most? I run a web site that matches hunters with landowners. Some landowners do not allow four wheelers for liability reasons. I stuck my four wheeler at "slippery creek" and my Bronco pulled it out. Perceptions and emotions... 'nuff said. Oh! Did I mention that my perception is the Bronco has a tighter turning radius than my four wheeler?...'nuff. They don't make them anymore...'nuff.
