Hey guys... Well I pulled the heads off my 400 today to check the gaskets. Hopeing I would find a gasket on wrong, but I did not. They looked perfect. Since I still have my 351M I checked it, and made sure that everything looked the same. The only thing I found wrong was there were two holes between the intake and heads that were blocked off by my new gaskets, that were not blocked on the old motor. I simply cut the slots in the new gaskets and put everything back together. I was kind of hopeing that the intake gaskets were causing the thumping noise I get when I shut the truck off. Now I'm thinking that maybe its because I'm running a 180 degree thermostat. I had my brother pick up my thermostat for me and I ended up with the 180. I believe the 400 is supposed to run a 195 degree thermostat. Could this be my problem?? I'm setting aside Thrusday to switch in a 195 degree and try that. Thanks again for the help!
steve, i doubt the thermostat is your problem. like you, i believe it's a head gasket problem. i a set of heads rebuilt one time and bought a gasket set from the guy that rebuilt them. i didn't compare the new with the old. i put the heads on a fired it up. what a mess, water was spraying out both sides of the motor where the heads meet the block. the gaskets were wrong. i took them back to the shop and the guy told me i should have checked them first. doooo!
i was wondering, does your motor has a drain plug in the block? try by passing the heater and see what happens and remove the drain plug from the block, after it warms up and let some coolant drain out and see what happens.
