charging issues?

Hey guys! been awhile since i have posted on here. so i have had a problem recently. I haven't been able to drive my truck for a while... and when i start it it is maybe once every two weeks. when i do start it i have to jump it cause the battery has been discharged.
This has been going on for a few monthes, as far as how often i start it. I try to run it as long as possible, but since I can't drive it on the roads at the moment i can't drive over ten mile an hour top speed in my field, prolly averaging five miles an hour or slower. so i know i am not reaching the desired speed for battery recharging.
when i started it a few weeks ago, it ran for a while10-15 minutes, then would stall. i had to jump it to get it going again. when i tried to start it before the jump, it just made a clicking sound when i turned the key.
so i got it running again last night with a jump. it jumped ok, i ran it at idle for 5 minutes or so, then tried to drive it around my driveway. it was fine as long as i was giving it gas, but if i stopped it would die. this happened, i jumped it maybe twice, then it ran fine for a while, and i stopped at idle for a while too, but it eventually died. seems kinda like the alternator is not recharging the battery. any ideas?

See what alternator you have, whether it is side post or rear post. If it is side post that means it is internally regulated and can be tested at most local part stores. If it is rear post it is probally externally regulated and the machine throw a fail code when they try to test them.If it was me and I had a rear post I would buy a voltage regulator. Its the square metal box bolted to the inside of the passenger side fender. Its about $20 and takes about five minutes to change. If that doesnt work take the battery to a parts store and get it load tested. It could be a bad battery.

If you have a voltage tester, see what your voltage is at the battery, with key off, it should be appx 12 volts. Now check the voltage across the battery terminals with engine running, now it should appx. 14 volts, if not, you may have a alternator problem. Also you may check for a short with engine off and all circuits off "make sure doors are shut, and all accessories are off" and by removing + battery cable and connecting a 12 volt test light between + terminal and +cable. if light glows you might have a short. The most important test is the engine running /voltage test. good luck You might try posting in the electrical forum "Electrical experts hang out there" also didnt get the year and make etc.

will try those tests. yes, i have a multimeter. the only thing is that i know my battery is discharged because i haven't been running it often. so i know it isn't going to read twelve volts off the bat. i.e. i'm not gonna get a good baseline 12 volts with the not running it situation.
