I have a '72 Ranger XLT with padded vinyl door panels. I need to remove them to repair the driver's side window mechanism. Do I need any special tools or will they just pop off? Also is there a company that sells good factory style door panels? I have a LMC catalouge that has door panels but they are molded plastic and they look nothing like the door panels in my truck.

yes they just pop off with a little effort, there is a tool you can get if you want to be delicate with the paint, it looks like a large , bent, flat head screwdriver, with a slot in the middle of the head.......... JCWhitney , forget the padded armrests, the ones without pads I use, and I hardly miss those ugly old cracked panels that had padded armrests
I think the door panels you refer to are for '73 to '79 trucks. Ones for trucks such as ours are harder to find. An upholstry shop can make them, just covered Masonite. The trick is punching the holes for the clips. Removal: unbolt the 3 bolts holding the armrests, 2 screws behind the door handle, and one screw in the window crank. Use one of the "panel pillers" with a rag to protect the paint and pop out the clips.
Hope this helps TomC
Thanks for the info. I know that the 67-69's had metal door panels, but I'm not sure after that, This is my first '70 or newer. I think that my door panels are factory for this model though. I might be wrong though. They have the matching woodgrain that is on the dash etc. I may just custom make some anyway.

Re: 67-69 having metal panels, my 69 Ranger F100 has padded panels with a strip of woodgrain thhough the middle.
Re: 73-79 JC Whitney Coverlay panels: If what you have is wasted and you can't find nice OEM replacements, they are decent. However, they differ from stock in look and are in my opinion a little cheesy. The ones I got for my 76 (Brown) were not really a matching color brown, and the moldings (esp the speaker grill) were kind of inferior to OEM. I would encourage someone looking for the 73-79 style to haunt the wrecking yard for good OEM.
