Ive got a 66 ford f250.
somebody messed up all the stock wireing. When my
tank is full the gauge reads way off the scale, when empty it reads 3/4 full.
What size wire should i run from the fuse box.
I already replaced the fuel gauge and same results. could it be the sending unit? There is currently a wire going from the fuse box directly to the fuel gauge, and then a wire from the sending unit to the gauge, any info on this subject would be appriciated
Sounds like whoever rewired the circuit may have done it backwards, since an empty tank reads full and vice versa. The wire from the sending unit should be a ground wire, because the gauge works on resistance. The only "hot" should be going to the gauge, and the fuse should be on that line (not between the sending unit and gauge). The needle travels toward "full" when the gauge is grounded by the sending unit (float is raised).
When the sending unit wire is connected to ground, the gauge should read "full". If the gauge said "full" all the time, that would indicate a short to ground. Since yours moves in inverse proportion (sort of) to the fuel level, it sounds like more of a reversal of the (-) and ( ) wires.
