I would like to install a oil temperature sending unit on a 5.7 EFI Ford, this is so I can keep track as to what engine is doing when under load pulling MH and toad uphill. Where would you recommend to install engine oil sender and tranny sender?
I installed the oil sending unit in the bottom of the oil pan & the trans sending unit in the C6 pan. I had the machine shop drill holes & weld a nut on to scrrew the sending units in.
Thanks for the comeback might do that to the tranny when I change tranny fluid, but for the motor I don't know if it is that easy to get the pan from underneat the engine but if anything else fails, friend of mine lend me a ford superduty service manual and the oil pressure sender is on the back of the motor where the tranny starts I wonder if I can incorporate a brass T and both senders onto that. Maybe there are some guru's who can advise me on that?
Thanks again Earl,
Dan (helgi).
Dan... I have the oil temp probe (mechanical guage) installed into a "Tee" at the oil pressure sensor location. This is not a good idea. You will not be sensing the "real" temp of your oil. It's kind of a "dead-end" location, where circulation is insufficient to provide good temp sensing. Fine for pressure, but no so for temp. On a long run, my oil temp might get up to 120, when "sensed" at this location, when I know it's at least 180 or higher. Best place to put it is in the oil pan, as described above. The probe/sensor really should be submerged in a sump. When I remove my 460 for overhaul, I will have a bung welded into the pain for my oil temp sending unit.
Thanks vettman, yea looking at the location it is a dead end so maybe wait putting that gauge in. The tranny gauge is more important anyhow as I will have some pretty long climbs to get over if I take the cocouihalla hiway the summit is 3600 some odd meters above sealevel and the climb is a couple of kilometers long. And pulling a toad I want to know the temp of the tranny did install that in the return hose to the tranny cooler so that should be okay if not can always move to tranny sump too.

Dan... I have a trans. temp probe in the return line of my C6 transmission, and it seems to work fine. I think you get enough flow in this location to accurately sense the temp. I do not plan to relocate this one to the transmission pan.
Pulling the oil pan is a bit of a pain. Many say pull the engine. l did it by pulling the motor mount bolts then jacking the engine up to where the oil pan clears everything coming out. You have to drop the oil pump into the pan to get the pan out. It's way too much fun.
If I had a shop big enough to get the MH into and warm I might think about doing that but at minus 25 below it will not be put in that's for sure. The tranny temp will have to do then which is more important in my opinion. Thanks for all the advise I certainly have them printed and in a binder for reference. A Merry Christmas and Happy and Safe New Year to all.
Dan.
