I have a question about my current drivetrain. I have a 78 F-150 with a tired 351 in it, and I have been thinking of offloading the engine because I have upgraded to a beefed-up 460. But, in light of having a 460 that is pushing over 510 hp, I have been thinking about getting rid of the granny-gear four speed, and building a rock solid automatic. I have no idea what a four speed of that flavor would be worth. I don't want to give it away, but I also don't want to put an asking price on it that will either make people laugh, or just outright scare them away. I have no idea of the mileage or what kind of abuse it has been put through by the PO, but it shifts and operates just fine (at least it did before I tore the truck down). Any ideas? Thanks!
They aren't rare thats for sure. I've seen tail splines worn right off a few over the years, so I'd look that over when it's out. Why the switch ? If you are really going to pound on it I'd stick with the stick.

Well, see I'm still up in the air about selling off the trans. Part of me says get an auto, but the part of me that loves driving says 'keep the stick, you fool!' So I am torn. But I figured I'd get the inside opinion from some other Ford guru's to see what it's worth. That, and I'm having a hard time tracking down the right parts to fit the 460 to the stick (i.e. a proper flywheel that will work).
