"Steering" Trouble or Not???......

Well, I just got my new ( Ebay find ) washer reservior and pump and was seeing how it would fit. This is where the problem starts. Now I see why PO had removed it. I have a 1979 F250 with a healthy 460 and L&L headers. When they stuffed all this in the engine bay they rerouted the steering shaft ( aftermarket, but not sure from who ) to clear the headers. Now the reservoir doesn't fit. Also, I have noticed I only have about 1/4" to 1/2" clearance from the steering shaft ujoint to the headers. The ujoint is all rusted from getting really hot. I thought that maybe the bearings were going out in the steering column. But after noticing the clearance and obvious heat problem on the shaft and ujoint, I'm starting to guess otherwise. What do I do?? I can't mount the reservoir because it hits the shaft. I'm also very concerned that the heat is ruining the ujoint and will eventually fail! Do I replace the headers with something smaller and replace the steering shaft?? Do I just say mount the reservoir in a way that it clears?? I really like these headers and the performance and sound but not at the cost of my steering. I really don't think a heat shield of any kind will help. I will get pics as soon as I can. I know that always helps.
