mustard colored fluid

what does a mustard mixed with mayonase build up around the oil filler cap on my engine mean?

it happened once before but that was after i put in some slick 50 treatment and it was the same color as the slick 50 but that was years ago and i haven't used it since. also i have been told that it means a cracked head or gasket is that true?

Usually, this is water\condensate mixed with your oil. This is a common issue on the colder sheet metel parts this time of year if the PVC circuit is blocked or the engine runs cold. Check your oil\dipstick, and look for water or the same discoloration you have described. If none is evident, ensure your PVC valve and PVC filter and hoses are clean. "a colapsed PVC hose can cause this" If they are all in good shape, install a 195 degree Tstat. This should help.

If water is in the oil..well, it could be a couple of things, mostly expensive or labor intensive.. Head gasket, intake gasket, cracked this or that, etc.

Riderman has it nailed down. On my hobby car I ran without a PCV for a while, but with plenty of ventilation. Got that yellow crud on the inside of the valve cover air breathers and sometimes out of the rear breather I had on the intake. Once I made up a PCV system, the problem went away and never came back.

Not sure what the yellow crud is, although I suspect moisture mixed with oil detergents. Some oils make more of it than others.

ok thanks

thanks like i said i was told it was a possible blow head gasket or cracked head from a mechanic a year ago at pepboys *i took it there on a slow day bribed the mechanic a 10 spot and had him throw my truck on a lift so i could stand under and make a list of what i needed to fix*

but that was a year ago and by my calculations if the head was cracked or gasket blown i would have had to add some more water to my radiator right? and since i have not added a single drop to it.... and since it was right after i added slick 50 which big suprise is that same color... i just dismissed it out right. now it is back both times were around winter so i thought mabey he was right. but i guess not thanks would have been nice to have an excuse to pop the heads off and check my cylinder for wear and condition of head but oh well off to the more imediate problems

The easiest way to check if the head gaskets are gone is to watch when you change your oil. If it looks creamy like egg nog then you have a head gasket problem. If not then Riderman is right.
