My father's '87 F-350 was making a squallin' noise... Sounded like possible brake issue to others so I went to t-shooting. Jacked up truck and ran idle thru gears,.squall was not present, I was able to make it sort of show a growl by stopping one tire so I had him ride the brake. Seemed to make noise from transmission... I pulled the drain and poked a magnet in and pulled what looks like a 1/4X1/2 roller bearing roller. So off came the PTO cover... Didn't find more large pieces but a gob of filings withsome small shards...
Is the trans in bad shape? It is a 4 speed Borg Warner... He would like a 5 speed so a used trans is a possibility.
He wants to stay direct swap as in no drive shaft cutting or swapping if possible.
Here are the numbers off the tag.

So what would be a GOOD STRONG 5 speed? This is a 2 wheel drive dually that WILL be pullin' trailers.
TIA,
Brent
Your T-19 needs rebuilt. obviously. Your not gonna swap trans to a 5 speed without driveshaft work. the trans are not the same length, IIRC.
You can swap in a ZF 5 spd. just get the trans and the rear shafts and hardware from a 88 dually 5spd. You'll need a diesel trans, or a 460 trans (and modify it to fit).
The driveshafts have to come out anyway to put the new trans in, so it's really no big deal to swap driveshafts
Not sure on a rebuild kit but the T19 trannys usually last longer then the truck and are plentyful and cheap used. PS gas or diesel bolts up but the gas tranny has the same high gear but a lower low gear.
I never said it was easy to put a gas zf on a diesel, just that it was possible with modifications.
On replacing the T-19, You'll want one from a diesel truck. they normally get the 4.02:1 first, which is good for our diesels. Some came with 5.xx :1 ratio, and almost all gassers had 6.32:1 first gears (real granny tranny). The latter effectively makes the 4 speed a 3sp in everyday driving, But you could break driveshafts with the 6.32:1 ratio pullin stuff.
A junkyard replacement will be cheaper and easier.
