It has been super cold here the last few days; -10 F last night. When starting the truck when cold and driving I typically get an extremely large screeching sound coming from the engine. It goes on/off randomly as it seems and only happens when it is zero or below. It is very loud. My first thought was a bearing from the AC compressor or something kicking on and off. Is this the likely culprit? Anything else you can think of?
It could be any of the idler or tensioner bearings, also. The cold makes grease hard and can cause the ***** or rollers to slide on the race which will make a flat spot on them. I would remove the belt and check for any excess noise and/or slack in the pulleys. Also check your belt for glazing.
i have a 05 with the 4.6 liter when it is cold i sometimes get a whistle loud i mistook it for bearing "howl" it ends up that i took the "nipple" off the stock air box you know where it goes into the inner fender well. and the cold weather whistle has only surfaced when the temps are down near -20
