I mounted the axle in a vice and then used a punch and beat from the backside of the seal. Just punch the punch through the rubber part of the seal to get to the metal part of the seal. Just keep working your way around and it will come off. Hope that makes sense.

On the backside of the seals I have is a big metal plate. Do you perhaps mean go in from the top where the rubber part is exposed?
The old seal came off quite easily on both of my axles. I just left the stub hanging down (with the long part of the axle still in the axle tube) and used a screwdriver & hammer to knock them off. Wasn't much trouble for some reason.
The old ones came off MUCH easier than the new ones went on. You should expect to whack on that seal driver pretty hard to get them on there.
Here's a not-so-good pic of what I'm talking about above....
EDIT: Jason beat me to it. I took my out and did the same thing with the axle in a vice but like Jason's photo and the one I posted would work as well.
Well I'll give that a whirl, any advice for putting them new ones on while we're discussing it? I have the stuff to build a seal driver as shown, and I also read a method on here somewhere about setting the seal on the wheel bearing and pressing the axle into it, any preferences.
I will be god damned if I pay dealership $100 to take the old ones off, and another $100 to put the new ones on.
I wouldn't pay they stealership .02 cents for anything unless I have to. When you pound the new seal into the knuckle make sure you use something like liquid gasket or even grease on the seal. Don't attempt to put it in dry. Do a search in here to see basically how they do it. Should be a piece of cake.
old seals are off, truck is out in the cold and the axles are nice and warm... so I improvised, held the axle up with my hand, short shaft into a 2x4 and went to town with the claw side of a hammer. Worked like a charm.
Is there anything acts of violence and releasing pent up aggression can't solve?
I have one of those 3in1 ball joint tools. I used the largest collar that came with it to work the new seal on evenly, just put a little grease on the inside and taped it around the circle
I gave up, almost destroyed one of the seals and i'm gonna take it to a different stealership to get them installed... hopefully they'll be reasonable with the pricing, because if it's $100 like the other dealership told me I'm gonna tell them to stick them seals where the sun dont shine.
i put mine on yesterday Dont give up you need to hit it hard just try to hit it on as straight as possible it will go I promise take a deep breath then smoke a marlboro and give it another go. I didn't even lube mine.
I was shocked at how hard I had to hit it though.
Speaking from experience be careful not to mar up the ends of the axle you'll regret it later I had to file the spline grooves on mine.
Don't give up though you can do it and it isn't worth the drive or the money to go to the stealership!!!!

Lol well thanks for the advice, but what really discouraged me is when I constructed the seal tool out of galvanized pipe... I broke the 1-1/4 end cap, checked to see if I made any progress and my seal fell apart and then fell off the axle

Broke the end cap !? Wow. I've done it 4 times now on my truck (the aftermarket NAPA ball joints failed, too), and my seals go on pretty easy.

I also had problems with the splines on the other end. Beating the U joint off the outer end got distorted. I didn’t even know it, so when putting all back together couldn’t get my mile marker hub back on I had to file and sand and still was messed up. I used persuasion to get it on hopefully it will come off one day in one piece
