400 vs. 460

Howdy ladies and gents. I'm sure this has been beat to death but how many have built there 400 for power instead of just swapping in a 460. Those of you who built the 400 what is your combo and power numbers if you know them. I'm looking for the 425-450 range and dont know if I should build the 400 or buy a 460 and build it. will mainly use this as a driver and to pull a 24' boat to the lake. thanks

I had a built 400 in my 70 f100 right after I blew up my 460 I enjoyed the 400m a lot better I was able to run the 400 on 87 octane and it got better fuel mileage plus at over 400 horse and torque the truck had all kinds of wheel spinning power

My engine is a 351M/408ci after .030 overbore. I'm using a Comp 255deh cam, Edelbrock Performer 400 intake, Edelbrock 600cfm carb, Scorpion roller rockers, TMI pistons, with OEM heads. Engine dyno'd at 339hp@4300rpm and 478ft/lbs@2900rpm.

Ive had both and have heard the huge mob that is opposed to the 351m/400 But personally i like em esspecially with a few simple mods. Do i like them better than a 460? no probably not, but you can still get pretty good power out of them.
Sorry im rambeling and still havent really helped you any

I've also been happy with my 408. Only upgrade I added is an Isky mega cam, and a 750 Holly double pumper. All other components have been new stock parts. Run the motor 5500-6000 RPM on the weekends and average about 12 MPG's on the highway when running speed limit. I'm able to keep my temp under 200 degrees while my Big Block friends have to shut off their motors due to overheating.

Never put it on a Dyno so I would only assume my HP is over 300.

I can't stress this enough. Swap to a 460 and never look back.

Also are some of you saying boring a 351m .030 makes it a 408? Wow, more like a 357. Thats rediculous.

Well then why does it say 351m? That would be like saying my .030 429 is 466 cubes.

the 351m and 400m are 2 different engines ford used the same valve covers for both the sticker said 351m/400 so alot of people think it's the name of the engine

Interesting perspective, I never thought of that. Makes sense.
