head-scratcher

Hi All,

I'm working on this 2004 F-150 Supercab STX 4x4 4.6 V8. For a customer. The customer complaint is that on cool or cold mornings, the truck will do a near-stall and shudder somewhat with little or no response for sometimes 10 seconds upon acceleration from that first stop after a cold start. The rest of the stops, no problem. The rest of the day, no problem. I have done some things to the truck to address this problem, but to no avail. Check engine light was on for a short time, code was for Cyl .Head Temp Sensor. Replaced that, and the temp guage reads pretty low now.
Any ideas are appreciated, I need to hear them all.

David

Everytime I hear stall or shudder on those I pull the coils and plug boots before anything else. Look for signs of arcing on the boots or any condensation on them or in the holes. Just a little tiny bit can cause it.
That temp sensor code could have been caused by the thermostat not working. I've seen it before.

Probably a good idea, but the truck runs pristine except during this one acceleration in the A.M.

I've seen moisture do that a lot. Also small cracks in the boots can be open on a cold engine letting a missfire happen. The heat could be causing them to swell. Moisture down there is the cause of probably 90% of the problems on these engines. In this cold and damp weather it's even more likely that is the problem.

Very good to know. I have an IDI like you, I haven't had to remove C.O.P.s on these engines before. Is removing the fuel rail necessary? It appears to be.

Sounds like a stuck IAC valve. Take off the TB give it a good cleaning.

No IAC. Fly by wire. I did give the T.B. a cleaning, no difference. Remember, only happens once during the whole day.

NOTE: Truck had a very poor battery and alternator, I replaced both. Could any sensors have suffered? Any guidelines on checking T.P.S. health/function?

Thanks.

....your customer usually start thier day off with less than a full tank of fuel? Any chance the moisture is going from the tank through the lines into the rail and/or possible that thier plugs need to be changed as well as coupled with the moisture?

Yes, very rarely has a full tank, usually around 1/4 at a time. Does the fuel rail need to be removed to get to the coil over plugs? I have heard bad things about plugs in these engines, is it a risk for me to remove them?

They are original with 80,000 miles on them.

Thanks Trigger

You probably will want to have the Lisle 65600 removal tool before removing the plugs in case you break some.

Looks like a nice tool. Thanks for your input everybody, I'll try these things and I will certainly post back about the results. I just don't think this will do it, but I will try.

The 4.6L engine doesn't have the spark plug removal issue, only the 5.4L.
