351W Block Help

I have been laid up with a bad back the past week and was unable to drop my block off to the machine shop. I found a another machine shop today that has two 351Ws, one with a .040 over bore and the other with a .060 bore. They come with new core plugs and cam bearings. My block will need machined over also, but not to this extent (I believe). I can get either of these two cheaper then the cost of parts and machining on mine. I do remember reading, maybe at this forum, that the 351W had thin walls and should only be bored out to a certain degree. Are these, the .040 at least, within tolerance for these blocks? Thanks for your help.

351W Block Help

Mike build your engine!
You most likely have to buy some parts that will add to the cost. Be careful of deals.

351W Block Help

Yes, the 351W is in the same family of Ford small blocks, it essentially is a 289/302 with a taller block to account for the longer stroke. So if you go with one from the shop (and I am not saying you should or shouldn't) get the one with the .040 overbore. A .060 sounds like a second rebuild and the potential for overheating is a possibility. But if you are in Alaska (rather than the hot desert southwest like yours truly) maybe it wouldn't be such a big deal.

351W Block Help

I SUGGEST USING YOUR OWN BLOCK! BUT IF YOU DO DECIDE TO BUY ONE OF THE BLOCKS YOU MENTIONED, GET THE ONE WITH .040 OVERBORE. THE 351W IS A THIN WALL BLOCK AND SHOULD'NT BE BORED NO MORE THAN .040. ALSO BE SURE THEY HAVE THE SAME DECK HEIGHT AS YOUR BLOCK. '69-'72 OR '73 THE DECK HEIGHT IS 9.480" AND LATER BLOCKS HAVE 9.5" DECK HIEGHT. REMEMBER THIS WHEN BUYING PISTONS! MY WINDSOR IS THE 9.480" AND I BOUGHT PISTONS FOR A 9.5" BLOCK BY MISTAKE AND DIDN'T REALIZE IT UNTIL I HAD THEM IN THE BLOCK(BIG PROBLEM!!!!)

351W Block Help

Thanks. I wasn't aware there was a deck height difference on the 351Ws. Now for the million dollar question. I have a '74 block that had a two barrel manifold. I wanted a 4 barrel so I bought one with an '84 casting number. Do you forsee a problem with this mating up? I appreciate all your help. Knowledge gained through ignorance is wonderful and I am beginning to perfect this skill. Thanks again,

Mike

351W Block Help

MIKE,

YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE ANY PROBLEM WITH THE INTAKE SWAP, THE PORT SIZES WERE BASICLY THE SAME THROUGH THE YEARS OF PRODUCTION. ACCORDING TO THE INFO I HAVE THE DECK HEIGHT CHANGED FROM 9.480" TO 9.5" SOME TIME DURING THE '74 PRODUCTION YEAR SO HAVE A MACHINE SHOP MEASURE YOUR BLOCK SO YOU WILL KNOW WHICH YOU HAVE! HERE IS THE INFO I HAVE:

YEAR CAST # DECK HEIGHT
-------------------------------------------
'69-'70 C9OE-B 9.480"
___________________________________________

'71-'74 D2AE-BA 9.480" 9.5" DH WITH '74 CAST DATE
_________________________________________________
'71- '74 D4AE-AA 9.480" 9.5" DH WITH '74
CAST DATE
_________________________________________________
'75-'81 D4AE-DA 9.5"
