TSB 09-16-9

Well, just got back from the dealer with a problem of the regen notification not working after this TSB. The Ford Tech wrote back that this is normal but in the TSB it states to drive until the Regen light is off(which to me means the regen is over) but it is still in Regen. it clearly states that the vehicle must be driven until the Cleaning Exhaust Filter message is extinguished. Either they got the regen down to 5 seconds which is how long the message stays on or once again, Ford engineering is worthless. I am sure they will revise the TSB at some point to say that you must drive until the regen is over but how can you tell unless you notice the flash and realize the truck is now underpowered. Anyone else have this issue?

My '10 doesn't say anything other than blipping a 'cleaning exhaust' message for about 1-2 seconds on the display and then goes away assuming I saw it. The only way I know it's in regen is when it drives and sounds funny or if I keep hitting the system info to see what's going on.

When I first bought my truck it did the same thing. Then there were numerous complaints about not knowing when it was in regen so they changed it to stay on all of the time during regen which is what the paperwork says its supposed to do still after this regen. Now it only stays on for about 5 seconds and turns off which is what the Ford Engineering guy says but it contradicts my paperwork making me feel like something is wrong. The other thing is that on one of the flashes that did not "take", my radio did not work for about an hour after they flashed it. That also happened this last time which makes me think the flash is faulty.

Unfortunately I cannot really comment on your flash, through owning my 2008 F350, my initial flash didn't display regen at all, then my truck would display regen for a few seconds then disappear, and my final flash that I have stuch with keeps the "Cleaning Exhaust Filter" on the screen until it finishes. Not saying Ford didn't change programming again and you have a newer flash, I have been deployed for the past 6 months. The one thing you can do, is after it flashes regen, and you want to verify that it is still cleaning. Press your "setup" then "reset" keys. That should put it in the system check, the very last screen from system check should verify whether it is still cleaning or not.

Personally, I wish we still had a way to manually start regen when we wanted too. I recently drove an Internation box truck with their Maxxforce 7, and what do you know, they included a switch to manually engage the cleaning.

there is another flash out there after the one where we all got the message to stay on continiously. My understanding is you cannot revert back to the flash that displays the message till it is complete.

So when I have been into my dealer I state do not reflash!

Mine is the same as eric326's and im very pleased with it this way now compared to before. I have one of the 1st 2008 trucks and got the 1st reflash, I ordered in dec 2007. It now says "CLEANING EXSAUST FILTER" untill done or when you hit info, take off screen, I just leave it alone untill done. I can tell for sure when im in regen by just checking the mileage im getting at that moment(of course its way lower than when not in regen.)

On mine: If you are in a regen process, indicated by the display, I can manually change the display to view MPG reading, but the cleaning exhaust filter message will reappear in about 2 minutes and remain until complete...or I fiddle with the display again.

Another observation: I live in a small town so even if the regen process starts I don't let it finish (I'm not going to drive around town for 30 minutes). The regen process will quit if you idle the truck. But I also notice that the vehicle must get up to operating temperature before the regen process will begin. I tried to drive to another small town (about 25 miles away) and the truck would not regen because it was so darn cold outside. On my way back, and the truck was warm, the regen started when I only had a few miles left to drive. ARGHHHHH! Oh, well.

New to DPF and PSD

Heres my story, sad but true. New F-350 Lariat 2010. Took delivery Nov 25th, I totally love this truck, it's fully loaded with all the goodies. But I'm starting to think the PSD was a mistake. On Nov 30th while driving to a early morning appointment she started to run ruff, knock loudly and a ton of white smoke. The truck stopped running and I had to be towed in. Dealer had it for three days and states a fuel injector had to be replaced. At this point I had less than 600 miles on the truck.
Last Saturday the 12 of December I noticed a very bad odor and smoke coming from the tail pipe again. People were driving up to me with their fingers holding their noses. It was very bad, a town policeman pulled me over as well. When he looked up how new my truck was, he let me go with a good luck! As I left a light came on " drive to clean exhaust" which I did on the highway for over an hour. As published in the manual it should change to " Cleaning Exhaust System" which it never did. Stopped at the dealer that same day and showed them. They told me to keep an eye on it and bring it in on Monday if it continued.
Well, Sunday the "service engine light" lit and a "green wrench" light came on as well with "Reduced Engine Power". Truck back to dealer on Monday. Just got the call this afternoon that Ford will have to order and install a new DPF. This may take till Friday!
They are chaulking this up to the filter being clogged by the fuel injector problem of last week. But wanted me to know that the engine hour meter states 45 hour with only 845 miles, meaning they believe I idle to long as well. WTF There is no way I have idled to long, I haven't had it that long.
All this in less than 1000 miles and 19 days!

Help!

that is 18 mph...so I can see why they say you idle it. What they fail to take into account is the idling from people who might want to buy it at the dealer before you.

Don't think the manual is up to date with the latest flashes. Never have seen a revision to the manual.. After the latest upgrades the regen msg only comes on for a very short time. My pyro gage tells me it is in regen and when it comes out. Mine is a early build 08 and the truck has run better with every upgrade. We are very fortunate as we have not had a problem of any kind with this truck that does heavy pulling as its job... 27K plus. This has been a very good truck..

Well, like I said yesterday, the TSB says the damn thing is supposed to come on and stay on for the duration. Who knows what the truth is on this. It is kind of sad really. Either Ford Documentation is wrong or the flash did not flash correctly.

When did this latest flash come out? Should my dealer be notifying me to bring the vehicle in to get it done. Last time it was flashed was several months ago, and after that flash was the first time I ever got the message saying "cleaning exhaust filter" previous to that, I never got any indication. So am I out of date? I'm not sure I should bring it in as I am currently having check engine light issues, because of the S&B cold air intake I installed. Any advice.

Take the intake off, put it back to the stock intake and the code will go away....dont take it in just for the flash. I am on the same one and I like it.

Richfaa, I literally laughed out loud. Are you sure you got this TSB though. This is for the cold weather white smoke issue. If you did, please let me know.
