Water pump

My truck is about to get a new water pump. Is there a better one avalible or should I stick with ford/international? Having a intermitten heat issue but no coolant loss. Truck is believed to be a early build 9/29/03 for the 04 my

The newer style pump is better, but it requires a new front cover also. From what I am told though, it is worth the effort.

I'm curious as to how you identified the WP as the problem? Is there some kind of flow test? Apparently you have eliminated the fan clutch and thermostat as possibles? I am aware the '03 WP was a less efficient model.

The reasoning I think it is the water pump is because. When it idles up in the morning it will blow warm. When I drive the truck it blows hot and when I'm at a light at idle it is cool air. I had noticed if I let it idle this summer it would engauge the fan clutch similar to a oil cooler stoppage I had when I first got the truck. This only happened if it idles for 5mins or more. And would not do it driving like it did when I had a oil cooler failure. So far I'm not loosing coolant and the color is still gold. So I have pretty much ruled out a egr, or hg issue. I can really think of anything else that would cause the issues. I've been reading up and a lot of other users have had the same issue and this was the fix. I want to say thanks bismic for the info. What all is involved with the front cover swap? I like doing upgrades but I'm not to sure a new stock pump would be better than a more extensixe tear down

When they made the change in water pump sizes, they went from 90 mm to a 100 mm diameter impeller. Thats about a 10% increase in area, it's also noted that if you update your 2003 by changing the front cover for the larger pump both pumps will bolt up because of the same bolt pattern. If you put a 90 mm pump on a updated cover you might experience leakage and over heating.
