Hey everyone, I'm just learning about Fords. I have a 65 longbed custom cab. It has a 400 from the seventies with an FMX tranny. I know the rear end is original so the gears are different from the ones in the automatic transmission. My goal is to get a pozzie (sp?) rear end. I am also short on money, being a student and all, so buying a new one from the shop is out of the question. Someone told me that a 67 LTD came with a pozzie rear end, but I question their knowledge. Does anyone know if it's true or if there are other Ford rear end's out there with pozzie traction? I am aware that the mock 1 Mustang has it but who has a mock one Mustang rear end for sale? Please let me know so I can start my treasure hunt.
Your search is going to be a hit and miss effort. Ford offered their Traction Lock rear ends (Positive Traction or Posi was the GM equivalent)in just about any car they made in the 60s and 70s that had a 9 inch rear end in it. Many of the 8 inch rears had the Track Lock as well.
This includes Faclons, Mustangs, Galaxies, Fairlanes, Mavericks, Comets, Cougars, Trucks, Torinos, Rancheros. Of course the 9 inch rears are going to be found in the V8 versions of these vehicles. Not all of the V8 cars mentioned however will have the Traction Lock devices so it gets tricky.
You will just need to start hunting salvage yards, want ads, the internet, etc. until you find someone with one for sale. If it is a good unit (just the differential no gears or housing) expect to pay around 75 to 125 for it. An entire chunk with the Traction Lock and gears will go from anywhere around 200 to 400 depending on the gears it contains but it will likely be set up and all you will need to do is bolt it in and relube it.
Another option is a Detroit Locker or a Lock Right locker although they are more expensive and seem to be harder to find used as everyone wants them.
Does this mean I have to buy one and if it doesn't have it, take it back? Is there some way of knowing, like turning one tire and seeing if the other turns as well?
