I am about to build up a 302 i have a 289 crank that I will probobly put in it i am going to put some 351 heads on it. What cam should I install? I want some power but i also want to get good gas milage. Also will a 5 transmision from a newer ford bolt up to the 302?
THERE ARE ALOT OF COMPANIES OUT THERE THAT MAKE CAMS, BUT MY CHOICE IS COMP. CAMS. IF YOU ARE WANTING MORE POWER WITH GOOD GAS MILAGE, THE 268H CAM IS A GOOD CHOICE.IT HAS 218 DEG. DURATION @.050" AND .456" VALVE LIFT ON BOTH VALVES. I HAVE INSTALLED THIS CAM IN A CO-WORKERS '75 F-150 WITH THE 302 ENGINE. WE SWAPPED THE FACTORY 2V CARB. FOR A 600 CFM VAC. SEC HOLLEY AND A EDELBROCK PERFORMER MANIFOLD. THE FACTORY EXHAUST WAS USED, AND IT RUNS GREAT WITH JUST ENOUGH OF A LOPEY IDLE TO MAKE IT SOUND GOOD TOO. AS FOR THE BELLHOUSING ALL 302'S HAVE THE SAME BOLT PATTERN. PRE '64 289,S HAD A DIFFERENT 5 BOLT PATTERN. IF YOU CAN, USE '69 OR '70 351W HEADS,THEY ARE THE BEST PRODUCTION HEAD. JUST LOOK FOR THE "L" SHAPE WATER PASSAGE ON THE INTAKE SIDE.
if your using a 289 crank then your building a 289.. since the 302 is just a stroked 289.. you will also have to use the 289 connecting rods.. the 351 heads are a good idea if there 69 or under heads.. 70 and up 351 heads are trash... trick flow makes GREAT heads.. they are really worth there money if you can afford them. and as far as cams.. ford motor sports makes great cams and roller lifters.. try an F303 or if your not gonna do as much racing B303.... good luck.. and remember dont drive fast... just fly LOW
I had a problem 15 years ago on a 289 swap to a 302, I used a 289 H/balancer and flywheel on the 302 and it was it had a very bad vibration.After consulting with some local mechs.,I was told that the 289 and 302 were balanced diff. and I would have to use the 302 flywheel and balancer. And also that not all the 302 were balanced the same. So you might want to keep this in mind as well. Good Luck.
