Alright guys some of you may remember that i was asking questions about these expensive little *******s not to long ago, well im back. I have found via craigslist a 4406 that has the shift on the dash set up just like i need. The only thing that is supposed to be wrong with it is the shift motor is bad, leaving it locked in 4x4. (from my experience with other electric shift t cases, not an uncomon problem) This is of no concern to me, as i have a perfectly good motor on mine. I do have a question though, how much play is the tail shaft supposed to have in it? I am going to go check it out on hopefully Wednesday and i want to know what i am looking for. I know i need to remove the motor, and shift it by hand and spin the assembly to make sure everything is in good working order. But, i dont know how much play this shaft should have in it (as this is what i believe to be the problem with mine). Thanks to all who help with this question of mine. and sorry about the long post.
Assuming you are talking about grabbing the tail shaft and hand twisting it back and forth. For me more than a 1/8 would be a concern. More than a 1/4 slop would be too much.
Thanks for the reply i will have to keep that in mind (i hadnt really thought about that kind of play in it). My dad was the one who checked mine and he didn't say how much play there was like what you describe, but he did say there was a little. He was more concerned with the front to back play in the shaft. i have heard that there should be a little, but he seemed to be concerned with it. Oh just to make clear the drive shaft was sitting on the work bench when he did this so im not taling about how the drive shaft slips on and off of the shaft. The shaft itself had quite a bit of play in it, about half an inch or so from what he said. It just seems to me that if everything is as it should be, that shaft should be rock solid and the only movement it should have at all is a turning motion. Am i correct in this assumtion? Ive never had one of these apart so i dont really know. Thanks again!
edit: he was checking the tail shaft comming out of the transfer case. that is what had the half inch or so of play in it. this seems to be a problem to me since the drive shaft slides on to the tail shaft and has roughly 3-4 (im guessing here) inches of travel. so i would think the tail shaft would not need to have movement in it.
well your kinda right. the driveshaft can be rocksolid or there are some that are made to move in and out. it does that so when you load you truck with heavy weigh and your truck squats or your suspencion move on rough terrain, you dont put alot of stain on your drivetrain. my front drive shaft is a two peice so it does that.
