Hey guys - here's the deal, my truck dies on me yesterday. I got it towed home, and it turned out to be that the nut fell off the positive side of the coil. Well, I replaced the ignition module with an Autozone one prior to finding out that it was just a nut. I also replaced the battery cable going from the battery to the starter solenoid. Now when I start it while it is cold, it will crank about half way, and then sound like it is binding. Let up off the key, crank it again, and will not start. Keep trying it, and then found you have to keep cranking it until it will finally sort of catch, then it will start running. Now, once it is warm, no starting problems at all. I swapped back to the Motorcraft module, and still the same problem.
Prior to this, I never had to excessively crank the engine. Oh yeah, the problem seems to have gotten worse after I replaced the battery cable with a new 2 gauge one.
HELP ME!!!!!! Oh it is a 1986 F-250, 351w, carbed.
sounds like your starter is going,i would take it off and get it tested.sounds like what happened to me,i replaced the starter and that seemed to cure it.
Thanks guys, is this just a coincidence? I am reaching a point where I am trying to figure out what to do. I am scared of throwing parts at it, and wasting the money.
I went back out to try it out. To clarify, it is cranking really strong, but it is not catching. It has to keep cranking, then will finally barely catch.
That's exactly what my friends 98 F150 did/does.
Pull the starter, check the teeth, i bet you a dollar that they are worn, and that the flywheel has some really really bad spots on it also.
sorry for the super large image... but im sure this is what you're going to see if you inspect the teeth of the flywheel. The teeth of the starter are going to be pretty rounded off ,if not chipped as well.
So explain again what it does. At first you said the engine will turn over and then lug down and not turn? And after that, it will not turn over at all?

Your engine is doing everything his does. Some days it never missed, and started right away. Other days, it skipped around, and missed quite a bit. It never didn't start, until now, but that was because it refused to catch the teeth at all.
The least you can do right now, is to pull the starter off and inspect the teeth.
Sorry for all the confusion guys, the starter is engaging the flewplate with no problem. It is spinning over the engine, but the engine is not firing. The first part about it not spinning over, was that it would spin the engine about half a revolution, then it would act like it bound up. Release the key, try again, and the engine spins over fine. But that is the problem. It spins and spins, but does not fire. The engine finally fires (weakly), then runs like a top. Turn it off, try again, and it is fine. Let it cool down, and the same thing happens again. Now that Ithink of it, it had a few hot start problems in the past few days.
What is your normal cold starting procedure? It could be a weak spark as was just mentioned, but it also could be a choke problem(not closing fully). If it is a choke problem, pumping the gas pedal about 3 times before cranking might help it out, though it will probably stall again unless you keep patting the gas.
If that doesn't work, I would suspect a weak spark also.
I normally start it like you said, 3 pumps and it fires right up. I was wondering, is there supposed to be a circuit sending 12 volts to the coil during cranking? I thought that was mentioned here before. Only wiring diagrams I can find for my year are for a 302 fure injected.
