Well i'm using my buddies ford while he's deployed and i can say i'm less than pleased with the blue oval. it's an 05 with 65,xxx miles on on the 4.6 and the most i can get out of the 24 gallon tank is 300 if i'm lucky on the highway. i drive it on post here and in two weeks i get 189 miles to a full tank driving it to the hanger and back home. I'm sure it needs a slight tuneup and all but i doubt that can make a major difference in the MPG. also i saw someone's post about a rattle noise i too have the same problem but it's from the driver side and it sounds like a loose pair of pliers. it almost sounds like detonation but it's all stock except the K&N drop in filter.
As to the codes i don't have any and there isn't any noticable lack of power. i'm at a loss i'm doing the tuneup when i get paid if anyone here has any tips to help me out i'm all ears.
I will give the ford credit though...it did pull a lifted tacoma that's 4x4 out of a nasty mud hole. with some decent all terrains it slung some mud and pulled him out like it was nothing. being a 2x4 thats not bad where i go playing in my 98 K1500.
It's a truck, and if you use trucks on short driving hops they get suck mileage. No way around that. At 65K miles, you might get a small bump is you change out all the filters and plugs (read all the plug threads before attempting). As far as the rattle, it is probably the heat shield on the catalytic converter. The '04/'05's all had that rattle after a while.
300 divided by 24 is 12.5mpg. If you're running reform gas (10% ethanol) that's average for mixed driving. Like I said, change all the fluids and filters, fill the tires to 40lbs and you might get a little better. Above all, feather the throttle.

He said he got 189 miles to a tank on post. That's only 7.9 mpg. But short driving on a cold motor isn't going to help. I wonder if the cat is plugged.

Indeed. I could easily see that when your driving habits involve just starting up, drive 5 minutes (through several stop signs), several times a day...especially on 10% ETOH. I spent a week on Bolivar Peninsula one time and managed to burn through a tank of gas only going back and forth from a beach house and the local stores (Liquor store mostly). I've got the 30 gallon tank and only managed 8 or 9 MPG. Constant start/stop in these trucks really sucks the petrol.
At 65K bad cats would probably be the result stuck fuel injector(s), and/or bad plugs causing so much misfire the cats get soaked in fuel and melt. If you've got a melted/clogged cat it would hesitate and surge real bad under heavy load (flooring it), it would misfire, and you'd get some smoke coming out the exhaust under load. You'd also be seeing several codes being thrown. Been there, it sucks. Good news is that if it is the cats they're covered 8yrs/80K miles. JUST MAKE SURE TO FIX THE UNDERLYING INJECTOR OR PLUG PROBLEMS. Or else, you'll just re-melt them.
