I am getting terrible gas mileage from my 2003 Expy Eddie Bauer w/4.6 engine and 2800 miles so far. Appreciate comments and what mileage other 2003 owners are getting. Also, mileage computer is about 10% high. Thanks
I am going to start tracking my mileage now that you bring it up, I never trust that onboard computer. I have the 5.4 in mine but it is still being broken in with 350 miles on it so far. I will get back in a week or so.
Guys, I have a 2001, which is a year old now, and I too at first got horrible gas mileage, like in the 8-9 mpg range. For some reason, I am not a car guru by any stretch of the imagination, at around 10,000 miles I started doing much better. Just this last tank got me over 14 mpg. Maybe the engine just needs time to get it's bearings straight or something. I can't explain it, but I have noticed a marked difference in mine over the last say three months.
I have put nearly 4000 miles on my 2003 5.4L Eddie Bauer already. Having previously had a 1997 of the same truck, I have been very pleasantly surprised by the mileage. On steady open road -- long highway trips -- I have gotten around 18.5 to 19 mpg. Tank to tank, for my commute into the city and driving here, I am averaging about 14.8 per the computer.
By the way, I have a terrible and getting worse high frequency squeek which I suspect comes from a seat or passenger side door. It is ruining my enjoyment of the truck. Anybody else had this?
608 miles on my '03, and averaging just at 14.0 on the trip computer. This includes 420 miles highway going between 65 and 85 mph. First 120 miles or so were at 11.0 on the computer. Any reason I should question the computer?
Thanks for the replies. I am beginning to wonder if the 5.4L engine gives better mileage than the 4.6? If so, we have a valid complaint with Ford Motor Co. about advertised mileage. Am keeping a log of miles driven, gallons added, computer avg. and calculated avg. Will show this to dealer when getting 3000 mile oil change soon and will see what he says about mileage reports from other customers.
You say you get terrible gas mileage and your computer is 10% high, but you never gave any figures. What is terrible? What is your basis for your comment? What are your driving circumstances/habits?
I don't disagree, mileage on these vehicles is terrible and I am always surprised that mileage on such vehicles is no better than it was on similar vehicles made 15-20 years ago. However, I did not buy my truck with the expectation it would get good gas mileage, and the window sticker is just an estimate. In fact, I don't think Ford provides this estimate, but maybe the EPA (not certain, but i seem to recall that). Sometimes vehicles do better, sometimes worse.
Should have provided some numbers! Actual mileage combining small town and local highway driving has averaged less than 14 mpg. Mileage computer was showing about 10% higher. Had dealer check at 3000 miles. He drove it on the highway at 57 mph and got 19.4 on a short stretch. By the time I got home, about 25 miles away, it had dropped to 16.1 avg. Supposedly, they recalibrated the mileage computer. Will check it over the next few tankfulls. None of my driving has been at highway speeds over 70 mph and there was very little of that. Previously got over 21 mpg highway (60 mph) with a 4.6 L engine in a 1998 eddie Bower Expedition. '98 had a 3.31 rear end and now they come with 3.73 rear axles according to the dealer.
