Does anyone know where I can get headers to fit a '74 f-100 390? I want good performance, but not a whole lot of money spent. It seems that all I see advertised is for Ch@#*!
I got Hooker Competition headers for my '73 F-100 with a 428. The same ones will fit your 390. Be sure to request "with street hookups" or you'll have to weld the exhaust pipes to the headers.
I got a set of Hedmans this weekend at a wrecking yard for $25 (and about $500 of my labor). They had bolt-on collectors, and a flange between all the tubes. No obvious evidence of leaks at head, and fairly clean. The good news was that all the header bolts came out of head (with patience) with hand tools an no heat. The bad news was starter had to come out to get right side out, and the engine had to be lifted off its perches, and power brake booster had to be removed to get the Left side out. Of course the truck was on it's hubs over a slimy mud puddle. The advantage I see, is that I know what the fit is like before purchasing. I want mine coated anyway, so my buddy is beadblasting them and I will coat and they should be as good as new (so long as there aren't any hidden leaks I don't know about). I have seen more than one variety in the wrecking yards. I have seen posts here praiseing Hookers fit. Just because the ads you see only list Chev 350's, doesn't mean that the company doesn't have an extensive catalog w/ what you need in it. I've seen FE headers listed in JC Whitney aka: 352-428. You realize that if you have a 360-390, what you want may be labeled 352-428 because these are all FE engines and the exhaust manifolds interchange between them.
if you are looking for cheap headers, go get a Jeg's catalog, they have them for $89.99. they fit pretty good. i have them on my 65 f100 wth a 352. they are made by Dynomax they include all bolts and gaskets, but i dont think they include the collectors, wich is about $15 for those.i suggest you get some header wrap for the headers, the tubes run extremely close to the starter, and i was having a problem with burning up starters. i put the wrap on, and that solved my problem. it lowers your engine campartment temp. and is suppose to increase the exhaust gas flow. the downside is the price it is $45 a box and you need two boxes. but thats just a suggestion.
