If it's factory, it's either 3.08 or 3.55. There is a tag on your pumpkin that will tell you exactly what you have. Did you instal the lift / tires or did the previous owner?

My limited knowledge is that a facory 8.8 axle can only handle gears as low as 4.56. I'm probably wrong. Does your truck feel strong? Perhaps it does have a 4.88 axle. Do you have a tach? What are your RPM's on the highway? Other members on this site can help you much better than I can.

Thank you for the compliment! I wanted a 4x4 also but couldn't afford one so I just made my truck look like one. The locking diff and aggresive tires DO help, but to be honest, a skilled driver with a normal 2-wheel and perhaps a basic limited slip could go just as far as I could.

It's all about whatever floats your boat, my Ford brother. Do you have any pictures of your rig?

3.55 with the stock 28" tires works well so you need 4.88 with your 38's to get the same final drive ratio.

thanx Conanski.
6cill, ill have to go check out the diff to see if there is a tag on it. i dont know, but i really think its stock. it seems good low end, but runs high rpm round 45. no tach so i dont know exactly how high. explain a little bout the lockin diff.
only pics i took are in the garage...or somewhere on my page.idk. the interior is a fugly disco blue. but im country and get mud and cement in it so i am gonna leave it for now

Interesting. I can't even imagine how a truck with 38 inch tires handle with highway gears. If you really do have a 3.08 gear, you will gain more power and better fuel mileage by gearing your truck lower (4.56, 4.88) to accomodate the much taller tires. The taller the tire, the higher your final drive ratio will be, which means less power - and worse fuel mileage (less power, more throttle, more fuel being burned).

The locking diff has it's pro's and con's. What I tell everyone is that if you have a daily driver, a good limited slip is all you need. Having a locked differential can be a pain at times.

Pro's: More aggresive off road traction. Easier to bark the tires on a curve (it's a pro if you like to show off, heh). Straighter launches. Brake-stands are much sweeter (again, a show off thing).

Con's: The **** end has a mind of it's own at times. You have to be careful or you can lose control on wet or icey ground very easily. I learned this the hard way - almost. God kept me from sending my **** end into a soccor mom sitting at a red light. I got on it a little too hard and the locker caused my tail end to slide into traffic.

A good limited slip seems to provide good traction without so much of the blunt charactistics of a locker.

Just do your research before making a decision. An auto locker like mine costs as much as a limited slip. I don't mind my locker, I would do it again in a minute, but my truck is no XLT Lariat.

I would get 5.13s, and not settle for anything higher (numerically lower). 4.88s would almost be acceptable, but get 5.13s, you are turning a lot of rubber.
