I would get 5.13s, and not settle for anything higher (numerically lower). 4.88s would almost be acceptable, but get 5.13s, you are turning a lot of rubber.
Remeber if your are still running the factory 8.8" rearend you don't want to go much over your suspected 4.88s Because the higher the number the phisicaly smaller the pinion gear the easier it is to shear off teeth with the load of 38s running a possible locker.
If you want to find out for sure what you have for gears then you have to pull the rearend cover off and count the teeth on the pinion and the ring then divide the ring by the pinion.
BUT if you want to estimate if what the P.O. was telling you is true then this is what you do.
1)Chock the front wheels and put the tranny in neutral.
2)Jack up the rear end of the truck and set it on Jack stands.
3)Put a mark on both rear tires so that you can tell when they have made a full rotation. Also put a mark on the drive shaft somewhere close to the pig so you can tell when that has made a rotation.
4)Rotate the rear tires(make sure they turn the same direction at the same speed) you may need help for this.
4)As you turn the tire one rotation count how many times the drive shaft goes around.
In your case if indeed you have a 4.88 then your drive shaft should rotate 4.8 times(almost five times around) when your tire goes around once.
Good luck.
