Ok, been searching the forms and have not found this info I am looking for.
I am thinking about a 302/AOD swap into my 89 B2 4x2. It will be a daily driver and Wife proof. Not looking for power just tired of the A4LD crapping out every year. I have a 302/aod sitting for another project.
The question is, the gear shifter on the steering colum of the 89 B2 will operate the AOD tranny? I can't find any ref to that here or other sites I visit! I don't want to put a floor shifter in it.
Just getting info and options for now, spent few mins glaring at that A4LD taking up space on the work bench.....again before deciding on next step.
As for the column working, check the shift lever on the side of the AOD vs. the one on the old trans. Same direction, similar length? If so, the old linkage would work as long as the travel is enough to go through the full range.
Remember, the AOD needs a TV cable set up to operate. Not just operate correctly, but to operate and stay operating.
Yes, I do have a 302/AOD package sitting for another project(swamp buggy) but My car is failing now and need to get the ole B2 back running. Just want a reliable setup for my wife and kids. Too bad she don't/won't drive stick.....
I am goint to check into adapting the AOD onto the 2.9 engine, but 1'st strike is the AOD startermotor is right inthe way of the oil filter of the 2.9 engine. Going to see if any filter adaptors can remidy that problem.
Never done it, but, having pulled steering columns from B2s, it looks easy enough to hook up a mechanical link to anything you want with a minimum of fabrication, if at all. Just do not use cheesy and weak threaded rod from Home Depot.
