<!-- / icon and title --> <!-- message --> Hey, I bought an 86 F-150 that has been converted to a carburetor. It has an AOD tranny (auto over drive) and it will only shift to 2nd gear. All of the EFI was removed and it runs amazing, but I am not getting 3rd or OD. Does any one have any suggestions? I looked at my old truck before i scrapped it but it was the older style transmission with the rod linkage, this one is cable operated.
I can tell you that if the tv cable that controls the aod is not adjusted exactly right it will burn up the tranny in a matter of minutes. How does the fluid look and smell. I would suspect the cable is out of adjustment.
The tranny fluid is fine (smells, looks, and feels). It looks like the previous owner welded a plate onto the bottom of the throttle control for the tv cable to connect to. my cousin had the tranny out, he works in a transmission shop. He checked everything over and said it's fine, but he was unable to adjust the cable. I think what I need to do is find a carb setup with the proper bracket for the throttle cable and tranny cable to set in. I was thinking an 85 carb if I can find one because it was only an option for the efi in 85.
If anyone is still interested in this topic, I was able to get 3rd gear finally but it's just revving up like it's kicking out of gear (which is what it was originally doing when it went into 4th). I wanna just swap tranny's with the older style, with the manual kick down like my old 83 had, but I'm not sure what i need to find so that the out put shaft and what not will just mount in. Any ideas?
