I'd like to buy my truck an xmas present. I've been reading on how restrictive the stocker intake is on these trucks. I've already for a 4" straight exhaust from turbo back. I'd like to do intake next, then a set of gauges, then maybe a chip for a bit more power and fuel economy (when I'm not standing on it )
Anyway, I've been doing a lot of research and am just overwhelmed on the choices of intakes for these. I am curious if there is consensus on which intake is the best? Or which one you all prefer? The summit racing retail store is down the street from me so would be nice to get one that I can pick up same day through them, but if there are better options that I can order online, so be it.
the 6637 air filter from napa is what i use, as well as most people on here. get yourself a piece of 4 inch exhaust hose, and put it in between your factory intake boot and the air filter, about a 4 inch piece will do. just do away with the whole factory air box and filter.
Like you said, you have many options, but most here, me included, will recommend checking out the 6637 filter, or Tymar intake. The search feature will net you many threads on the subject. Happy hunting!!!!
Cool I've got some leftover 4" pipe from my exhaust system. I love DYI over a kit any day I'll read up on how to get that done, sounds like a great (and cheaper!) alternative to a brand name kit.
Every intake kit has it's ups and downs - advantages and disadvantages.
The DIY kit filters well and is super cheap. Hands down probably the cheapest intake mod you can do. The down side is it's also loud. If you like to hear the turbo and engine all the time, then you won't mind the noise. For some folks though, it gets annoying after a while.
Ford has a replacement kit that is an upgrade to the stock filter setup. It uses the same filter technology found in the 6.0L trucks, and looks/fits like it came from the factory. The downside to this setup is the filters can get expensive (they do however last a long time), and if you are running larger than stock injectors, you'll find it can become restrictive.
There are other kits out there too, from companies such as AFE, S&B, etc. Most can get kinda expensive, but many do work pretty well. There aren't usually a lot of K&N fans around here. I tried a K&N drop-in filter back when I first bought my truck, and had really bad luck with it, so I steer clear of K&N.
Although there are other good filtering systems out there, I picked a system where I never have to buy another filter again, with great filtering properties, S-B is my choice. Here's a link and where to find it, Clay's great people and he'll explain the difference. Click Riffraff Diesel: S&B
6637 for me too,the only downside of the 6637 is it's a little on the loud side, not to the point to where it's obnoxious, but a little louder than most"prefabbed" air boxes.Like Mike was saying, you have to replace the 6637,some other intake kits, you get a reuseable filter,Just my.02 worth....On edit:Yeah...what Curtis said...I didn't read all the posts...LOL

X2 Mike!
I have run the 6637 for about a year and I just didn't like them.Thats just me.I had talked to Mike at RRE about his S&B and how much he liked his and how good of a set up they are. That was enough for me!I gave Clay a call and had one on the way.
