Make sure your air doors are opening and closeing tight. When i bought my 81 i took it apart and found a ink pen jammed in the the defroster door.Or the heater core finns could be pluged.(dust and dirt or a mouse nest)Make sure both of your heater core hoses are hot.

Notice the VT? Yup Vermont and heat in a truck is only needed here 11 months of the year. Hey my 78 Bronco had the same problems. Here are a few possible solutions.

First I agree check the coils and vents. Remove all non-Ford debris. I have found everything inside heater ducts in VT trucks and cars. Mice love to nest in them and chipmunks think they make great nut storage facilities. Leaves and all the other crap that works it way in.

Disconnect your heater hoses and flush your heater core out with water. Does the flow seem restricted? The core could be clogged.

Check the valve on the heater hose. See that it is in fact opening and closing.

Check your thermostat. Your truck would not be the first one with a thermostat stuck open or just plain old missing.

Now the money part. A new thermostat is a few bucks and a new heater core will set you back about $25.00 from a parts store.

Good luck. Stay warm.

I'd also check all the vaccum lines that run under your dash, and to the heater valve
