400 rebuild

What does the little keeper washer on the oil pump drive shaft do? Does it keep the shaft from going to low into the oil pump? What if I install the shaft without it? I already put the pan on and don't want to remove it unless it is necessary. But I don't want to mess up a new engine over something so minor. I assume that it goes keeper down. Advice please.

Thanks
Rich

this retainer keeps the driveshaft in the oil pump when you remove th distributer. if it's not there and you, at some point, have to remove the distributer there is a good chance youll pull the driveshaft out of the pump and drop it into the pan-- that would really suck

sorry cruiser but I strongly reccomend you fix it and take the pan off, it's a do it now while you can, or do it later when it's harder thing
